I seriously can't keep up with vanity sizing 8 months ago

At the start of highschool I was 43 kilos and I was size 8 (New Zealand sizes, probably a 2/4 in US today), I have since gained weight (now 49 kilos) and I’m a size 6 in most stores, 8 in a few, and a 10 in one. So I’m 6 kilos heavier but a size smaller.

New Zealand sizes used to be slightly smaller than Australian sizes (even though both countries are s’posed to follow the same industry standards), now over the past few years more and more Australian store have opening in NZ and the NZ market has since adjusted it’s self to the Australian sizing. And then general vanity sizing has occurred so I’m now a size smaller, even though I’m heavier.

I looked up some vintage patterns on ebay, according to Australian pattern sizes from the 1950s, I would have been size 12 back then. How crazy is that.

Vanity sizing has been going on since the 1940s, the number on the tag simply doesn’t mean anything more.

I had donate 2 pairs of jeans to the op shop because a lot of the weight I gained went to my butt, I didn’t wear jeans for a while because I was in between sizes (annoying!), I’ve put on a little more weight and I’m still in between sizes some of the time but lots of 8s do fit me now! I bought a pair of size 8 jeans today, I loooove them :)

Still not marking this off though, until I get out of the in between size properly and until I gain some more weight and fit size 8 tops as well.

My favourite black cigarette leg jeans are too small for me now. I wore them to uni today… so uncomfortable! It sucks coz they are my favourite… but it’s good because I might just be a size 8 now (yay I can shop in the womens section instead of the kids section), and I get to buy a new favourite pair of jeans!

Why can't they have standardized sizing?! 15 months ago

I went into Supre today and tried on a size 8 jacket and a size 8 high waisted skirt -everything fitted every where, so I’m size 8 in Supre sizes, the website says the measurements for size 8 are 31-24-35 (my measurements are 31-24-33.5). Supre generally has smaller sizes, I went into sportgirls and tried on some 8’s there too, but they were all a little loose, the sportsgirl website says the measurements for size are 33-25.5-35.75

It’s pretty annoying how they do that… why can’t they all be the same?

I'm up to 45 kilos, 16 months ago

Or around 99 pounds -I’m aiming for 48 kilos, or around 105 pounds. it’s a slow process, I was sick for over a year and I’m finally starting to put weight back on. And this all means a bigger dress size, I’m not sure what weight I’d be to be size 8 (Australian/New Zealand sizes) at my height (162cm/5’3). I went into one of my favourite clothes stores and tried on a size 6 and an 8 jeans, the 6 was a little tight in the hips but fitted well in the thighs (At my lowest weight when I was my sickest, I swam in the 6) and the 8 was a quite a good fit in the hips, but maybe still needing a belt just, and pretty loose in the thighs. So I’m between sizes at the moment, almost there!

My scales are out of whack, 17 months ago

they don’t wind back to 0, they go back to 3 :S
So I’m weighing in at 47 on the scales, So that makes me 44 kilos, 4.5 more kilos I’ll have a healthy BMI at least. Maybe a bit more before I’m size 8, I’m so very very narrow in bone structure.

I’ve been looking up measurements to try and find out what measurements would be a size 8, every website seems to say a different thing, and from my experience of working in retail sizes are really ambiguous – there were many times when a customer asked for a particular size and I had thought to my self that she wasn’t because I thought she either looked bigger than that or smaller than that. So no more fixation on weight and measurements, i’ll fit a size 8 when I fit a size 8.

I’m size 6 in tops and size 4 or 6 in bottoms, that’s Australian/New Zealand sizes by the way, so size 6 is size 0 in USA sizes and size 4 in UK sizes, my measurements are 30-24-30… I have not found a single store that stocks size 4, but some store have 6s that fit me (don’t ya just love vanity sizing and no standardised sizing system??). Size 6 can be hard to find, especially in formal dresses as I found out today :(. Every store seems to have size 8, the measurements are 32-26-34, I don’t think I’ll be able to gain 4 inches around my hip very easily, I tend to gain evenly on my hips and bust, but with 32 inch hips I should be able to fit size 6s pants well and maybe some size 8.

To any one who’s reading this, I know what you’re thinking… [sarcasm]poor little skinny girl[/sarcasm]. I’m not comparing my weight issues to any else’s, I know it’s possibly a more difficult life being overweight (well actually I don’t know that, but if your overweight you probably don’t know about the struggles of being underweight…) I know there are people out there who will be on weight loss diets their entire lives, people who would do any thing to loose weight. But that’s not my point, this isn’t about making comparisons. I’ve been really sick, I was even in hospital for a few days, I lost a fair bit of weight. It’s frustrating not being able to find clothes because they’re all too big, it’s frustrating hearing people ask if I have an eating disorder (which is so $#@*ing rude, I don’t have an eating disorder, I’ve always been really small, so by that logic I’ve been anorexic for my whole life, and if that’s true then why aren’t I dead yet?!? ARGH)

Any way, I just want to gain some weight so I can find some clothes that actually fit.
