I have to say: My Vienna-community-idea did not work. I gave up in September or October 2008.
Since then I have been playing around with a website that collects inspiring stuff:
http://www.etwasneues.at
The name means “something new” in German. Maybe, it will become a success, maybe not – I mainly want to practice being a Webmaster with this site.
But the big goal of having an own e-commerce-site is still on my list! ;)

Online now...

A very basic, yet working version is accessible now. All feedback is welcome: http://www.vienna-community.at
Especially the English texts are probably not perfect. ;-)

The concept
I am playing around with the concept and design stuff.
The main question is, what to include to make the site attractive for new visitors. So far, it will contain:
- Reviews and ratings for services in Vienna
- Reviews and ratings for sights and places in Vienna
- Basic information on Vienna
- Big user profiles
- (maybe) some classified ads
- a section to sell souvenirs
Probably still too much.

Filling it with interesting content will be the harder part.

Another week has passed. I changed the logo and migrated another website to Drupal. It is funny, how a possibility that can become true (with a little effort) still seems to be unreal.
I still think, there are many possibilities in e-commerce and data-mining.

I’ll present a working version of the site to a business consultant on November 13. By now, I made a plan for the structure and installed the modules on the site. The basic layout and stuff like a logo are ready too. Not perfect, but good enough for now.
Building a Website that works in two languages (German / English) is not easy – but I would not call it difficult either.
This weekend, I am moving the website of our literature-club to Drupal. So, my own project will have to wait till Monday.
To be continued …

After getting a PhD in Political Science I did not get a job in the field, which is a pity, because I am a very good Political Scientist. ;-) But this field of interest won’t run away.
I did some studies for low payment and had some crap jobs. Finally, I declared, that I am unemployed.
One Month ago, I heard of a program to help people found small companies. I have been interested in e-commerce and communities for some years now, and I am a decent PHP-programmer, dealing with it as a hobby for two years. Probably not good enough to convince people to give me a job as a web-programmer. So I decided, that it could be time to try something new:
I am developing a community-website on Vienna now, with some ads and will use it to sell souvenirs. It is based on Drupal, and with my effort and some ideas, I hope, it will grow and become a nice online city-magazine.
The construction site is here: http://www.vienna-community.at
Not much to see, at the moment.
Hope, it will work.
