Next steps?

A busy couple of weeks and I’ve realised I’m now very behind in updating all my entries here!

I finished my beginner’s drawing course about 2 weeks ago now. The five weeks covered an introduction to perspective, proportion and tonal marking. I definitely felt as though I gained confidence and improved as I went along. I really enjoyed working with charcoal and doing more complete drawings in the last two classes. I now need to figure out where to go from here… I’ve done one sketch since the class finished but I need to get a bit more proactive with that. I also need to figure out whether to go and spend the money on another course. There’s another one that logically follows on from the one I’ve just completed.

I borrowed out

3 books on drawing from the library today, including Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Tonight I did a short practice sketch of the couch in the living room. It was okay, but the cushions weren’t right and I couldn’t figure out for the life of me how to make them right. More practice tomorrow I think.

I attended my first class tonight

and loved it! It was from 6pm – 9pm. Tonight focused on perspective. I found it pretty difficult to be honest, probably because I’m not mathematically minded. Regardless, it was lots of fun and it felt so good to be drawing again. I was looking for a back-to-basics course and this course is it. I’m going to try and practice a bit more with the perspective the rest of this week in my own time to see if I can get it to sink in a bit more.

Next week is proportion.

I have done something positive towards this goal

Last week I booked into a five week drawing course (one evening a week for three hours). It covers an introduction to perspective, proportion and tonal mark-making. I used to paint when I was younger. I kind of stopped in my late teens, and in my twenties did bits and pieces off and on (more off than on). But it feels like ages now since I’ve picked up a paintbrush or a pencil and I wanted to do something to get back to basics and develop my confidence again. It starts in about a week and a half.
