UmiSal in Ras Al Khaimah is doing 30 things including…

stop worrying about everything

10 reasons why I should not worry 3 years ago

1) I am connected to God, the entity that has infinite power, wisdom, and mercy. This thought alone empowers me beyond imagination; to pray to the entity that knows what I want, what others want, where I’ll be next, how the weather will be tomorrow..etc is simply great strength.

2) The way of life offered by my religion, Islam, automatically equips me with strong weapons against worry. Muslims are required to have strong spiritual and social life, and Islam requires Muslims to meditate, be active, not obsess over results (a Muslim does his best, and leaves the rest on God. Only half of that equation simply doesn’t work in Isalm), and genreally be positive. See my other (upcoming) post on Islam and worry if you are interested.

3) I have already accomplished a lot. Academically, I have worked hard and in return, I have got wonderful results. Some failure won’t take away any of that from me. :)

4) 99% of my worry always turn out to be unjustified. I mean most of the time things turn out to be wonderful, and my excessive worry was simply exaggerated.

5) I have a wonderful family that supports me, and a wonderful group of extraordinary individuals as my friends. Most of them are positive figures that inspire me greatly, advice me, and are just plain fun to be around.

6) Nothing is final. Change is natural, which means that hard times change into good ones, as much as it is the other way around.

7) Materialistic results are not everything. You might have spent some years in a job that turned out to be not to your liking, and to the negative it might have looked like you have wasted your time. But to you, you got to know new people, some of them turned to be genuinely good, you lived through something hard, and ultimately you learned about something that you should avoid in the future. What I am trying to say that we acquire treasures of intangible benefits while we still obsess about materialistic things like time and money.

8) My worry made me get to know my life better, and it drove me to try great things like spirituality, yoga, and breathing among others. I am now better equipped than most people against not only worry but also many other negativities.

9) I have my basic needs met (food, sleep, shelter..etc) which automatically deems me as part of the fortunate few in this world that have these needs fulfilled.

10) Life is too short and funny to worry about. :P

what a vacation 3 years ago

This vacation has been a crazy whirlwind of worry. It all started when I had graduated, back in June. I am driving myself crazy about what should I do.

Work? if yes, where? I have a good offer but it is in another city where my brother (and some friends) live. I am trying to shift it here, but then my thinking starts seeing all the good things I’ll be missing if I stayed where I am (taking a brave risk, being close to friends,..etc.). Then, when I finally settle with the offer I have (the one in the other city), I get all anxious about the notorious traffic of that city, possibility of exhaustion, being away from family..etc.

Another alternative is pursuing a Master’s degree. I did very well (thanks to God) in my college years. But I have always been stressed out back then. Again, I am afraid of exhaustion, and of failure. Plus, this option imposes another risk: I might have to travel after getting my Master’s to get a PhD, and I don’t want to study abroad.

I am driving myself crazy. The first thing I feel every morning is a surge of fear and worry. God help me.
