To what degree of fluency must one achieve before they can check “Learn another language” of their 43things list? I can’t confirm, but I am pleased to say I am checking it off mine! I finished a semester at the Univerisity learning German. I am far from being fluent, but the simple fact that I know a few words and phrases and recognize words and pronunciation is enough for me, because I did in fact learn some of another language. For, even if I had only learned a single word it would be more than I knew before. I can’t hold a conversation in German, but things happen in baby steps. I’ve wanted to learn another language for a long time, and as far as I’m concerned learning something is better than learning nothing. I am one step closer to the ultimate and glorious finish line, no matter how long a time it may take.

A friend of mine speaks German as his first language. So when he went on a little trip I decided to buy some educational CD’s and teach myself a bit of the language so that I could surprise him by speaking a few words upon his return. Well, what I found was that I actually enjoyed doing this constructive project in my spare time. I was proud of myself for being able to understand what the instructor was saying in German. I want to learn much more—this time for myself. I am fascinated by people that are fluent in more than one language. Communication is the key to so many things. I intend to take classes locally and hopefully soon! It’s funny that something as simple as this can make me feel empowered. I suppose it’s true, knowledge is power!
