My wife and I have hosted five girls.
The first girl was an angel on earth…Ten years later and I still correspond with her almost every week. The next two were not without problems, but we parted on excellent terms. The fourth came back for college and is truly a permanent part of our family. I have visited each one of these girls and their families in their home country.
The fifth was not as successful. It’s not worth going into the details, but she went home after only two months.
It is important to find an organization approved by CSIET. Our organization stood by us through some very difficult times with our fifth girl.
I am also a community representative for the same organization. I make monthly contact with my students and their host parents. If there are problems, then I become as involved as I need to be to resolve the situation. I am there to protect and look after the students, but I also work with the students as it is their responsibility to adapt to their host family. Host families that receive no support will not likely host again.
So…choose your placement organization carefully, know what to expect, and don’t hesitate to use your community representative.
