Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

A Duet

I always thought it’d be so cool to find a willing friend to be your partner while writing a book.
My best friend wants to write a book. I want to write a book.
Why not do it together?
I think it’d be different, and interesting due to the fact our writing styles are so different. I’m slow and explaining while she is fast and detailive.
I have a great idea in sitting there in the back of my head and I must try it out. If I fail, It was worth the try and I’d gain experience anyhow! :]

So much for Constructive Critisism

I do take CC when I post chapters of my book online. Though there are a few things people say that completely shut me down and make it nearly impossible to write. They think they’re helping-but they’re doing the complete opposite.

This girl…Well I can’t explain it exactly.

She’s the very top review

I don’t know, it to me didn’t sound like CC at all. It sounded more like bitching about certain things and it makes me feel like the worst writer on earth!
When someone tells me to correct certain things, I go “Okay thanks!” but that one just made me feel like i was being bossed around by someone who thinks she knows how things HAVE to be.
Idk, what do you guys think?

Book Covers

Yes, I had to do this! :D
I think it really helps me become excited to write the book.
Besides having to sit down and write paragraph per paragraph-I like to also draw my characters or plan what the book itself will look like.
Here are all three covers to my books.

Photos taken by myself and edited.

(You may also find this a fun thing to do during writers block)

Ooh! Put it out of my mind!

Wow, as fun as this is-I’m having some trouble with these two characters. Kay and Vida. They are a couple, but I’m suddenly becoming grossed out and can’t write about their romantic encounters.
Ever since I got a boyfriend-I haven’t been able to think of them romantically.
It’s weird, I just feel uncomfortable while writing.
Hopefully the feeling will wear off as I must get through this chapter.

I'm Not Rushing

For once, I actually wrote 10 chapters of a book without rushing to the point of the book.
As a good friend of mine (someone who writes books as well) said “I like how you are pacing and telling a story first. If it were me, I’d be too impatient and get to the main point by chapter 1!”
Usually that’s how it is for me.
I have a great plan and twist, but hurry into it without giving people a chance to get to know the character/s.
I’m finally past that and am approaching the real twist. It’ll either be Chapter 11, 12, or 13. :]

Whooey, this is getting hard.

I have so much…no…I have NOTHING BUT time on my hands. Yet I can’t seem to write a book in that time. I just sit there and do whatever without thinking.
I think I’m becoming lazier and lazier hahaha.

I finally finished the 4th chapter of my book!
It was a major relief because one of those chapters was holding me back and was screwing with me head. I desperately wanted to finish the chapter so I could get on with it!!! And now it’s done! Can’t wait to get on Chapter 5. ^^
So happy right now.

Sudden Inspiration

I needed that kind of boost that gets you going. I needed something to make me want to write. A reason I guess.
I was in the library and not only did I find how little mermaid books there are, but how little amount of student writers there are. I suddenly envisioned myself in the library grabbing my very own book off of the “Ca” section of the shelves. And what the book would look like meaning cover and “Author’s Page” and I imagined watching a girl walking out the door holding the book.
Suddenly I just said “I have to go home!” so I could hurry on to the computer and start writing!
I now have that boost! That reason and excitement!

1 3 and 4

AH crud. I finished the 4th chapter and felt more accomplished than ever before until I realized I purposely skipped Chapter 2 to make things go faster.
Skipping made it so much easier, but now I have to write the chapter.
I don’t know what to put, though.
Hopefully something will come to mind.
(And turning Chap 3 into 2 will not work; trust me)

Skippin, Skippin away!
I’m tired of writers block and the 3 years it took me to write one page of one chapter.
I’ve had trouble with beginnings for everything I’ve ever written.
This is the most important book to me, so I’m just skipping the first couple chapters until I’m finished with the book-then I’ll write them.
Anyone think it’ll be a good idea?

In fact (Writing this 15 mins after I wrote the above) I have finished a whole page so far and am still going. I just skipped directly to chapter 3. :]
