I began on 43 Things one year ago today! In that time, I’ve had an opportunity to correspond with LOTS of great people, and get to know many of you a little bit better. I’ve really enjoyed it, and feel that being with you all has, indeed, made me a better person. As for the stats, I’ve given out 3439 (or so) cheers, and received about 1000 less (2439). I’ve got 26 people who subscribe to me, and I subscribe to 17. Of those 17, I miss them when they’re away, some more than others, but all to some degree. I’ve cried over some people and their goals, (I worry for Wren and Sadie consistently) and laughed with many as they’ve achieved others! I’ve done 19 things myself, and I have to admit that most of them are because I put them on a list on this website, and looked at them almost every day. I continue to reflect on my one word resolution for 2009 (write), and give it additional thought whenever I sign on, because it’s at the top of my list. I find it very interesting that my most cheered goal is “Tell my wife how much I love her more often”. It doesn’t matter if I move it up or down, it consistently gets the most cheers. It’s probably the one goal I need to be cheered on the least…I am well aware I have the best wife in the world, and I tell her I love her often, but I never take her for granted, so this goal stays on the list! To all of you who are working on your goals, best of luck to you…keep thinking big thoughts….don’t let the naysayers get in your way and thanks for the many cheers you have given to have a positive impact on myself and others. I love you guys! Yannigan

and I wonder how many of us are keeping to our one word resolutions? I have had mine on my mind every day of the month, but haven’t been able to find the time to “WRITE” as much as I would have liked. In fact, I’ve found that I may be losing “DISCIPLINE” (last years word). Somehow I have to keep each of them in mind and find the time that each of them deserves. Just keeping it top of mind will insure that I do get to it as much as I can. It sounds like many of our team members are having success!! Let us know how you are doing!! It’s good to know we’re here for each other!
Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.
With a 5-pound potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax with your arms down to your sides. Each day you’ll find that you can
hold this position for a little bit longer.
After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-pound potato sacks. Then try 25-pound potato sacks, and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 50-pound potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I’m at this level currently.)
After you feel comfortable at that level, go ahead and put a potato in each sack.
(Obviously, humor was not my word this year!!)

Let us know how things are going, and what steps you are taking to keep your one word in the top of your mind. I like to repeat mine first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and as often as I think of it in between. Maybe you’ll post it in inconspicuous places where you’ll happen upon it from time to time such as on the refrigerator or bathroom mirror. Perhaps you’ll just put it into your psyche that when a situation comes up that you need to “enact your resolution” it will just come to mind. At any rate, I’m interested in seeing how this experiment works, and I hope you will share your results along the journey. Here’s to a great 2009 for us all!!
Prior to 2007, I would make all of these New Year resolutions that would be forgotten, ignored or given up on by January 15th (end of January at the latest). Then in 2007 I decided that I may be able to focus on my resolutions and give them more attention if I could boil it down to just one single word. In 2007, the word I chose was “COURAGE”. I just felt at that time that I needed to grow some balls and start sticking up for myself (especially at work), and to have confidence in my abilities, thoughts and actions. Each day when I arose, I would repeat my resolution in one word, and each night before I went to bed I would do the same. Amazing things started to happen! I began to be taken seriously in many aspects of my life, and my confidence began to flourish in many areas.
In 2008, I decided to try this again, and I chose a new one word resolution: “DISCIPLINE”. Each day and evening this was how I began and ended my day…by repeating my one word resolution and considering how I had been successful in achieving it for the day. Amazing things again began to happen. By focusing on this one word resolution, I began to achieve discipline in my life. I achieved many of my goals: I gave up soda/diet coke (216 days without one and counting); I am losing weight (33 pounds since the beginning of 2008), and I have found that I CAN exhibit the discipline in my life necessary to achieve additional successes.
For 2009, I am going to change things up a little, and pick a verb as my one word resolution rather than a noun! It is only because I have been successful in 2007 (COURAGE) and in 2008 (DISCIPLINE) that I think I will make my word for 2009: “WRITE”. Hopefully, I can take the courage and discipline I have learned and put them to good use in conjunction with my focus on “WRITE” to achieve a goal in 2009 that I have had for many years, which is to write a book. I am anticipating a very good year…..!!!!
