Planted a garden 1 month ago

I planted my first garden (by mistake) when I was eight years old.

I had been digging a 2×4 foot hole to bury some prized possessions (white figurines from a Corn Flake packet promotion) – Hey I was 8 and they were my special thing!) :)

A neighbour who become a friend gave me a cutting off a red geranium that I commented looked very pretty in her garden. She was a few years older than me and told me all I had to do was put it in the ground and water it.

Mum had yelled at me about the big whole which had filled with water from the rains we had (it used to rain when I was a child :]) and told me to fill it in. I negotiated that if I could have that area of ground as a garden I would fill in the hole and create a wondeful garden.

Mum agreed with conditions.

Ever since then I have grown all sorts of flowers and vegetables. It is a never-ending source of enjoyment, fun and relaxation.

Nowadays I grow fruit trees too.

The vegetables and fruit are nice to eat and the flowers are lovely to take photos of, and just enjoy.

My advice, start small and let your love for gardening grow.

The easiest way is to start with geraniums because they are almost unable to be killed. If you can’t grow a geranium then…

Even pot plants. Put a small piece of geranium in a pot. Give it about 300mls of water and leave it in part shade for two days then water again. You will get to know when it needs water by watching its leaves. When the leaves drop just a little it needs water.

HINT: I never over-water any of my plants because they become reliant on the drink. Make then strong, restrict the water until it’s absolutely necessary. However, I always allow rain water to fall on them whenever it does – mother natures water is so much better than tank or town water. You’ll see what I mean when you study the growth of your geranium.

Most of all. Have fun!!!
