learn Hungarian

and because i’m having such a whale (wail?) of a time with Mandarin at the moment (ask SL and M), i’m going to count this as done for now. i don’t want to have a bad conscience when i don’t sign up for lessons in january, and it was definitely learning the (very) little i did for the budapest trip. maybe i’ll have a chance to come back to this goal in the future. but for now, viszontlátásra!

i went to the secretive sign-up session last week and learned that lessons start this thursday. in a fit of euphoria i signed up (well, put my name on a list with no commitment whatsoever), but have since worked out that (a) it is the same day as the book club i’m trying to join and (b) i would have to miss at least 1, if not 3 other weeks for seminars/seminar preparation.

it’s just too much at the moment, so i’ve written a mail saying i’ve reconsidered and would like to start in january. think that was a good idea. breathe.

deserves a goal of its own. of course, the title should more accurately be “learn the absolute rudiments of Hungarian”, but let’s think big for once. i hope i get more time to write about what i’m learning soon.
