start a service revolution

My job will change soon to involve a position with the Center for Servant Leadership where I work – this is the idea of helping form leaders who seek to empower others. I will be working with high school students to examine social justice issues and to get more involved in the community. The program actually started last year but now, half of my job will involve working on this project. I’m excited that this might be the beginning of making service and personal involvement and “random acts of kindness” more commonplace…at least in a few of my circles of influence. It’s also a challenge for me to keep looking for windows of opportunity!

I think that service is easier when it is easy. Americans will usually be generous as long as it’s convenient, and there is nothing more rewarding than feeling like you have helped someone else. But it is also possible to do great things with minimal effort when we all work together. There are benefits for both givers and receivers of service…service is therapy! I think it helps us realize that we all have something to give, whether it’s time, money, energy, ideas, perspective, or love and compassion. I think if we can find ways to make acts of kindness second nature, we can start to change our families, our cities, our country, and the world. It starts with an attitude of willingness to give and awareness to needs. This is where I am beginning.
