I’ve always wanted to learn another language, simply for the fact that I think Americans are less cultured than other societies because we only speak English.
But I actually have a reason to learn another language now, and I have decided that it will be Spanish. Not only is Spanish useful on a daily basis everywhere in this country, I have a personal reason for learning it.
I have sponsored a child through Childern International (www.children.org) for the last year or so, and previously I was sponsoring a young girl from the Philippines. However, she has withdrawn from the program, so I chose another child to support. My first search showed up a boy from Honduras, and so I chose him. His name is Rafael, and he speaks Spanish. It is one of my goals to visit him sometime in the future, and I’d like to be able to speak to him directly when I meet him.
I’m trying to decide whether I will be able to learn well enough through buying lesson books from Barnes and Noble and practicing with my friends at work (I work in a restaurant), or if I should enroll in the Boston Language Institute. BLI would be faster, but also more expensive. I think I will try books first…
