The Strain by Guillermo Del Toro & Chuck Hogan

A Boeing 777 arrives at JFK and is onits way across the tarmac, when it suddenly stops dead. All window shades are pulled down. All lights are out. All communication channels have gone quiet. Crews on the ground are lost for answers, but an alert goes out to the CDC. Dr. Eph Goodweather, head of their Canary project, a rapid-response team that investigates biological threats, gets the call and boards the plane. What he finds makes his blood run cold…

I absolutely loved this book. I normally stick to reading historical/paranormal romance, but after my mom read the book and loved it, I thought I’d give it a try. The book grabs you from the beginning and doesn’t let go. Each page is full of mystery and intrigue. Even halfway into the book you don’t fully grasp what is happening, which makes you want to keep reading.

This book is actually the first in a trilogy that Del Toro & Hogan are working on and I’m anxiously awaiting the next book!

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading “soul” who has been given Melanie’s body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer’s thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body’s desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she’s never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

I am not a fan of sci-fi books at all, but this isn’t what I’d call your traditional sci-fi book. It’s like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, except from the alien’s perspective. I really enjoyed this book. It was sweet, sad, emotional, loving, tender, kind, etc. Definitely a great one to read!

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

The searing, postapocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy’s masterpiece.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food-—and each other.

The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, “each the other’s world entire,” are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

I am a huge fan of postapocalyptic novels. And this one takes the cake. I was moved to tears by this amazing story of The Man and The Boy on their journey to the coast. I think everyone should read this book. There is a reason it’s a Pulitzer Prize winner.

Dead Until Dark (Southern Vampire Mysteries, No. 1) by Charlaine Harris

Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. Until the vampire of her dreams walks into her life-and one of her coworkers checks out….

Maybe having a vampire for a boyfriend isn’t such a bright idea.

A fun, fast, funny, and wonderfully intriguing blend of vampire and mystery that’s hard to put down, and should not be missed. (Susan Sizemore)

Being a big fan of vampires, I had to pick up this book. In fact, I got the boxset (which contains the first 7 books in the series—there are 8 total, the 9th being released in May 2009) for Christmas. After reading Outlander, a very long book that requires concentration, I was hoping for an easy read. And Dead Until Dark certainly is. But it is funny and sexy and light. I’m looking forward to reading the other books in the series. I definitely wouldn’t let anyone younger than 16 read this book due to the sexual elements of it!

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another…

In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon—when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord…1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire’s destiny in soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life …and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire…and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

One of the best books I’ve read! It is a long book (850 pages), but I adored every minute during Claire’s time-travel voyage to Scotland and especially her romance with Jamie. I absolutely loved this book, but I don’t think I’ll read the other books in the series. At least not for awhile.

Books to Read Before Buying New Ones

I received several books for Christmas this year, so I’ve told myself I’m not going to buy any new books until I finish all of these books I was given. Below is the list of books I need to finish before I can buy new ones:

Vampires Are Forever by Lynsay Sands—COMPLETED

The Host by Stephenie Meyer—COMPLETED

The Road by Cormac McCarthy—COMPLETED

Lady Sophia’s Lover by Lisa Kleypas

A Quick Bite by Lynsay Sands

Dirty by Megan Hart

Wicked by Gregory Maguire

Then there are The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris (books where the new HBO show Trueblood is based) I’ve started reading. There are a total of 8 books in the series. The 9th book to be released May 2009. I own the first 7 of these. I need to buy the 8th book and then the 9th when it is released. My goal is to finish all 8 of these books before the 9th is released in May.

A new year, more books!

I read 17 books last year (amazing!). I can’t believe it. I never used to read, but I did so well this year and I really enjoyed it. 2009 is off to a good start.

I started reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon about a week before Christmas. This book is about 850 pages (borrowed from a friend), very detailed and required a lot of concentration while I was reading it. Last week I went on a trip to Boston and I knew that it would be the perfect time to catch up on this book. So, I read this book during my 6 hour plane flight to Boston from Portland, and then read it some more while I was actually in Boston, then finished the book during part of my plane flight back home to Portland yesterday. It was an amazing read.

Then, during the rest of my flight home, I read and (almost) finished Dead Until Dark, which is the book that the new HBO show Trueblood is based. By the time we landed, I had about 100 pages left to finish. I was too busy unpacking and whatnot last night when I got home, but I woke up this morning and finished it. It was a very easy read, but a good book anyway for vampire fans (which I am). I can’t wait to read the other six books in the series.

I have this thing about buying books. Even though I borrowed Outlander from my friend, I plan on buying my own copy to keep. Probably a used copy on Amazon or something. I love owning books. I wish I had a book shelf, but right now all my books I’ve read are stacked up on top of each other on my tall dresser. It makes me proud to look at all the books I’ve read and conquered. I loved almost all of them, too.

16 books in 5 months

So I’ve done very well with this goal. I started reading more books back in July and haven’t stopped. I’ve read about 16 books in the last 5 months, which is amazing! Its probably the most I’ve read in my entire life. I want to continue this goal!
