I don’t know how to convey the combination of relief, happy dance, bliss, and exhaustion—it is the end of an 18 year project that has driven me NUTS. I figured out, pretty early into it, that I am not a born novelist. I am a good writer, but I hate writing fiction.
But I couldn’t just drop it. I had to finish it.
And guess what—it’s finished!!!!
Am I completely happy with it? No. Could I tinker with it for another 18 years? Of course.
But right at the moment, the blasted thing is DONE and OUT OF MY HAIR and I am happy to be alive!

I was able to negotiate to use some of the chapters as a paper for one of my courses, provided that I footnote the history in it. Given that the last chapter is part of that (the one I haven’t written) I now have carrots and sticks in place!

I’m still a little nervous about some of my research, but one of my courses this fall may help. This is an achingly slow process (and I am absolutely certain I never want to do it again!) but I have not quit.
I have SO much admiration for people who can write for a living. I’d go bats.

How long have I been working on it? I started the research in 1988. I started writing in 1989. It’s nearly all done, has been for over five years. I just can’t bring myself to finish it.
So, get over it, already, girl, and FINISH it.

I’m embarrassed to admit how long I’ve been working on it. Time to finish it, and turn it loose.
