I posted a question at tribe.net’s Sikhism group (which is inactive) and about a month later or so, I got an answer about orkut, saying that there is a friendly Sikhism group there. There’s nothing in my area, so I have to go online to ask questions. Still haven’t found a print English translation that does the Adi Granth justice… the only one I’ve found is apparently not a good one, so I’m not buying it. But the person at tribe that responded was kind enough to point out a couple of online translations that they find favorable.

from the library I have borrowed the 1978 book “The Sikhs : Their Religious Beliefs and Practices” which is not, from my cursory glance, the best introduction.. but it’s about all I can find at any library around here. I’ve noticed that the Adi Granth, or Sri Guru Granth Sahib in English translation is not something one can buy at an affordable price.
