Learning latex is worth for sceintific use. 3 years ago
LShort is a good book for the latex tutorial. I follow it, now I can do the most job using emacs and auctex(a latex plugin for emacs).

But it is too complicated for the normal use, maybe you can choose wiki or blog or muse-mode in emacs.

I dont’ think Latex is better than Word if you, but it is really used in science field and it is easy to learn. Hope those guys learning one text tools and use it effectively.
P.S: I use emacs and auctex to help me writing latex.
