I have been speaking to a girl from Bolivia over the internet for a few weeks now almost every day.
Getting regular practice really lets you see where your weaknesses are, helps to concrete the things you already know into habit to the point where you don’t need to think in English first and, this is something I really like, it allows you to see how quickly you’re progressing.
My Spanish is not particularly good, I have trouble with irregular verbs and I am only just figuring out how to conjugate to use future tense but I think generally the conversations are good if difficult and slow-going when I reach the limit of my abilities.
To help me I use the dictionary on lingro.com because it is fast to use, unfortunately it doesn’t have every word so I also have a large dictionary by my computer. I also have a copy of “Spanish Grammar” published by Oxford University Press which from Amazon costs less than £4 and less than £2 if you get a secondhand one from Amazon Marketplace. For such a cheap book I have found it invaluable, it explains in a way that I can understand (I was terrible at languages in school) how to say pretty much anything.
I’m sure there are places online where you can meet people who want to learn English and will help you learn their language, which if you cannot visit a country where they speak the language you want to learn then it is probably one of the best ways to learn.
