take a photo every day for one year

I started the year really intending to take a photo every day. It’s not that easy. Well, it’s easy if you don’t mind what the photo is. Trouble was, I wanted the photos also to have some merit. And when you work from home, and don’t have the opportunity a lot of the time, it’s not easy to take a worthwhile photo every day for a year. So, for a lot of the year, I didn’t. But I did look for the photo opportunity every day, and if I found it I took it. So I call this done, and will look for a new camera-related goal for 2007.

OK, so I’ve lapsed a bit. I haven’t been taking a picture every day. I’ve been trying to take my camera around with me so that if I see something pic-worthy I can take one though.
And… I bought a new camera! Canon PowerShot S3 IS. A bit of an upgrade from my current PowerShot A95. Which will now get passed on to dunkv. So maybe he’ll un-lapse from this goal too..

I seem to have lapsed on this goal. Haven’t been taking any pictures at all recently. Must try harder. I think I’m having the same block as I have on so many other things: if I can’t do it perfectly (in this case, tak a good, interesting picture) don’t do it at all.

Although also, if there’s nothing new to take a picture of, what’s the point taking a picture?

Maybe it’s just me. But standing outside taking pictures (never just one) of things seems to attract attention. Which gets me embarrassed. So I try to do it quickly. Bad pictures. Half the point of this goal is for me to learn how to use all of the features of the spiffy digital camera I got myself. It does everything from point-n-click, to fully manual. So of course when I’m trying to take pictures, I’ll take a bunch using the range – an auto, then move towards the more manual side. And the manual bit takes time. Now, while you look OK taking time when using a big camera (you know, one of those big black SLR thingies), I’m sure I look a bit weird doing it with my little PowerShot. However, if I want to learn, I need to just ignore the people, get over the embarrassment and get on and just do it.

Some days have been quite tough – and it’s only the first month.

I started on New Year’s day. So far I’ve managed it – although some are really not worth having taken. At least two days of every week are going to be difficult, but it doesn’t say take a good photo every day.
