I love Taiko drums
Their reverberation can be heard far away so powerful is their sound. They summon me with their commanding presence, quietening my mind and drawing my absolute attention. I stand, a spectator, mesmerised by the strong fluid movements of the drummers. They strike with force and grace, filling the air with a rhythm that echoes within as well as without. Their deep tone and complex melodies soothe my soul and instill a meditative calmness.
I learnt ordinary drumming at school a long time ago. But it’s nothing like experiencing Taiko drums. I’m drawn to them in a way that’s hard to describe. I’m humbled at the idea of learning them myself, an honour I’m unsure I’m worthy of.
Ironically my one sibling, a brother I adore, must share this fascination as I found he learnt Taiko drums for a while. I have a dream of us performing together that feels so exhilarating, I hope it may come true some day. For now I am just as excited about seeing him again when I’m next back home. And when I return for good, I already know the locations of some schools where I can start learning Taiko drumming. This will be one of the most fulfilling goals I can achieve =o)
