I have cut out all my coat pieces so I can start putting them together now. Hopefully this winter I am going to finish the coat, although it has taken me two weeks to get this far and the cutting out is the easy bit.

Wedding outfit 3 years ago

I made a skirt to wear to a wedding which I think looks really good. DH was dubious about it because the material is so bright, but I thought it was great for a summer wedding.

Unfortunately it didn’t go as planned. I made the same pattern recently and that went really smoothly, but this didn’t. I used the same size pattern as the previous skirt, but I must have altered the first one after cutting it out because the new one was definitely a hipster skirt which was unfortuante because I didn’t want to show my tummy at the wedding. The zip, waist band and hem all went wrong. I don’t think you can tell, but I’m certainly thinking of taking some of it apart and finishing it better

What should I buy to help my dressmaking? 3 years ago

I’ve got a bonus through work and after tax I’ve got enough to maybe treat myself. I’ve thought about something to help my sewing, but I don’t know enough about the two items to make a decision

  • dress form – I am starting to alter my patterns now and I am interested in trying to make tops, however I’m worried about the bust size being too small
  • overlocker – the only thing I know about them is I can use them to neaten edges, are they better than zig zag stiching on sewing machine, are they useful for anything else?

Almost finished a pair of trousers 3 years ago

but I’m not quite happy with the waistband so I need to think about whether I’m going to change it. Once that decision is made I will then know how much I’ve got to hem them. Unfortunately they may not fulfill the role of cool loose trousers for the summer because I think the material is warmer than I expected.

I have also written my first review at PatternReview.com about this pattern. http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/readreview.pl?readreview=1&reviewnum=15418

How do you alter patterns to fit? 3 years ago

I think I’ve got skirts pretty much sorted now, and I’m now trying a dress, but there are more variables!

I’m trying to make a dress and I’m struggling to get the bodice to fit. Unfortunately it is for a wedding and I don’t have too long to fix the problem before I give in and go shopping.

Oh dear, what to do, what to do? 3 years ago

I’ve been making a skirt to wear this weekend on a hen party. I’m almost finished and just realised I’ve made it too large. I’ve measured myself several times while I’ve been making it and trying on different parts to ensure it fits, but I got it wrong. At the moment my guess is it is between 2 and 4 inches too large.

Do I take it apart and try to finish it on time or do I just put it aside and ignore it.

The picture isn’t great, but it is the same pattern as this one http://www.43things.com/entries/view/545579 in bright pink corduroy.

Finished another skirt 3 years ago

This is different to anything I’ve made or bought before, in fact my husband isn’t sure about it because he thinks its too fluffy! It was simple to make, but there was so much material it got a bit awkward.

Typical isn't it? 3 years ago

I had some free time this evening so thought I’d do some sewing. I pulled out a skirt that was already cut out and pinned together. I tried it to check it still fits, and it did so I’m already to start sewing, BUT I can’t find the thread for it. I know I bought it at the time because I’ve got the zip, but I just can’t find the thread. After spending a good amount of time looking for it that was the end of my free time and I’ll have to try again tomorrow.

I finished a skirt as well 3 years ago

I started this skirt two years ago and finally finished it this weekend. I wore it to work today and nobody noticed :(

If I had finished it last winter I would not have fitted in it, but fortunately I’ve kept some of the wedding inches off and I could just about get it on.

I finished my bag last weekend 3 years ago

I used it for work all last week and it survived. I altered the pattern slightly so there are four internal pockets (mobile, purse, palm and other) and added a loop to hook my keys on.

Unfortunately I snapped a needle while doing the last strap, but I’ve got over the shock of that now!
