I have a MA and 2 years of the PhD. Next year is exams, then dissertation.
Thinking of getting a PhD?
A PhD is NOT for you if:
- * You have never held a “real job” <—seriously, do NOT go straight from undergrad
- You have no idea what to do with your life
- You think you might like corporate america/working
- You want to make lots of money
- You’re not very self-motivated or proactive, or think that it’s enough for you to just be “smart” to get a job
A PhD is a good choice if:
- You’re self motivated, driven and realistic
- You’ve worked for a while and miss the intellectual stimulation of the academy
- You’re not going to get upset and emo about missing the prime earning potential years of your life
- You can treat school like a job
I’m so glad I went back to school. Seriously, I love it. It’s too much work and stress and blah, blah blah blah blah, but it has opened doors for me I didn’t think possible. But you can’t be halfassed. You have to commit and really go for it. It’s definitely not for most people.
Get back to me in three years and we’ll see if I still feel that way.
