i’m not much of a camper but i’m willing to try anything. when i went to dubai for holiday, my friends planned a camping trip in the desert. the campsite is in hatta which is a couple of hours drive from dubai. it is in the mountains where there is a ‘wadi’ – dry riverbed that contains water only during times of heavy rain. it is also said to be like a creek.
by the time we got there, it was dark and there was a lot of difficulty finding the right spot to camp. my friend wanted to camp by the water. now, this is a mountainous area, that means off road driving. he has an old land rover jeep and i sat at the back… not fun! wife and daughter of course sat in the front seats. it took longer than expected to get there. by the time we set up camp and started our bbq dinner, it was about 10ish. we then had a break in our dinner as we needed more wood for the campfire and the man of our little ‘tribe’ disappeared for more than an hour to find firewood. we finally got to sleep about 1am.
when we woke in the morning, it was well worth it… the long uncomfortable journey, the hostility of a couple arguing, the dust, sand and dirt… all forgotten. we had camped by a stream. as you walk further into the ‘valley’ the stream becomes a pool… a pool of cold fresh water you can swim in. it was therapeutic and refreshing!
