Where was this field when I was in college? I have never had the head for the amount of pure mathematics needed for a pure math degree, and unfortunately many applied math programs have gone too far down that road in recent years in the US. Applied math is something of a lost art, in its own right. But in recent years a new field has appeared—computational science. It combines a lot of applied math and numerical math and skill in computer science with expertise in getting machines to do things. It seems to be the right field for me. Now how to get into it without having to (1) get another PhD than the one I am finishing now, and (2) having to do an unpaid internship. (I am a little too old and financially under-developed to do that!)
