I erased the whiteboard in my study and started making a map of all my online identities, sites with accounts, etc.
Results so far: I have 4 distinct (major) clusters of accounts.
The first is isolated from the others, and this constellation includes most of my blogs/journals, 43things, and the like. This constellation has a weak connection to a new personality/identity that I have been forming for a specific purpose. It has no connection to my real world identity (except via IP logs on servers or my ISP).
There are two clusters that are fully linked both ways. One is my personal email/Facebook (fully identified with my real name) and the other is my professional online identity. These accounts also link to my phones so that connects to real life and real world locations.
Yet another cluster, fully isolated from the rest, was one that my wife and I used for, well, let’s call it research into free expression. It is made up of half a dozen email fronts, some journaling, and is mostly defunct though I do still use the IM channel once in a great while.
There is a much weaker identity that I have been building up recently that I want to use for artistic practice. It will be integrated to my personal and work accounts; used mostly as a front to keep this part of my life encapsulated-at least electronically-but not as a cut-out for isolation of stuff I’m doing from my real identity.
Still not sure of what I will do to integrate/coordinate all of this, but making a list is the start.
