My God. I tried to find a Cantonese teacher here… but no one was willing to step forward.
“I speak the Zhaoqing dialect.”
“I speak the Hong Kong dialect.”
“I speak the Guangzhou dialect.”
I want to speak Cantonese because it’s so common in the States… but which one is more common? I’m thinking that Guangzhou dialect will probably be the best, but it’s still a bit overwhelming.

I applied for a scholarship to study in China and put Guangzhou as my third choice – with the idea that maybe I could pick up a little Cantonese to go along with my Mandarin.
In the two months that I’ve been here in the southern gateway to China I’ve discovered that Cantonese isn’t something that you can really “pick up:” it’s something that you have to sit down and learn. I’m tired of trying to say “I don’t understand” and botching the tones and instead saying “I don’t eat” so the time has come. I’m going to learn Cantonese.
