It took something bad to happen before I was able to wean myself off TV, but I’m getting there. My TiVo died the day I left on vacation and I didn’t notice until I came back 5 weeks later, thus missing all my favorite shows. This helped spur me into stopping watching a lot of the shows I kept up with. Then finally, two weeks ago, the TiVo died for good with no way to recover and so I’ve been watching no more than about a half hour a day. Not bad. But DirecTV is replacing the TiVo for free so we’ll see what happens when I’m enabled again.

In addition to watching TV shows, I tend to always have the TV on in the background whenever I’m doing something else like cooking, working at home, surfing the web, even reading. This is not good. I need to find something else to do. To imagine, I actually went an entire year without even owning a TV and now I watch about 2 hours a day actively and probably 3 or more in the background.
