Dad has tons of audio (reel to reel), video (8mm), and photos from his music and teaching career. It will take some time to digitize and organize content but at least I got my favorite photo up to share with dad’s many friends and collegues.
RICHFIELD, NC – Dr. Richard Harding Brewer, 84, of Richfield, died at 2:55 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2006, at Stanly Regional Medical Center. He was born Aug. 12, 1921, in San Diego, Calif. Dr. Brewer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was professor emeritus of Pfeiffer College. Dr. Brewer spent his boyhood years in Escondido, Calif. He received a B.A. in music at San Jose State University, an M.M. in education from Indiana University and a doctorate of musical arts from the University of Southern California. He was professor of music at Pfeiffer College from 1962 to 1987. Throughout his lifetime, he held the position of director of music at various churches, the most recent being at Matthews United Methodist Church in Matthews. He served two terms as president of Los Angeles Choral Conductor’s Guild from 1958 to 1960. He was a recipient of the N.C. American Choral Directors Association’s Lara Hoggard Award for distinguished service in choral music in North Carolina. Survivors include wife Eileen Joyce Brewer of Richfield, whom he married on Aug. 18, 1951, in Minot, N.D.; children Lynne Brewer of the home and Andy and Allana Brewer of Winston-Salem; and grandchildren Andrew Isaac and Tayaiba Hanna Martina Brewer of Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by mother Grace Foncannon Brewer, father Herbert William Brewer, brother William and sister Phyllis. A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at Matthews United Methodist Church in Matthews. The Rev. Dr. Ken Lyon will officiate. The family will receive friends after the service at Matthews United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to Matthews United Methodist Church, 801 S.
