He’s too cute to be fierce! But don’t tell Boo that; he likes to think he’s a very tough dog. Except when he gets excited to see somebody he knows and loves. Then, he picks up a toy in his mouth, wiggles from end to end, and does a happy dance! Whoops – then he remembers he’s a tough dog again. Boo has had trouble finding a home because he will growl and protect his possessions. But at Best Friends, he’s living with some very unafraid caregivers who love him just the way he is, and his life is full of doggie friends, too.

Living in an abandoned car in the desert!
That’s no place for a cute doggie. But that’s where Papago and a bunch of other dogs were found – in Arizona, taking shade in wrecked cars and under trees. Goodness knows how long they were out there, fending for themselves. But they were hungry and thirsty!
Papago is such a nice guy, too. Oh, he’s shy. He’s very shy. It takes treats even to persuade him to go on a walk with you. But he’s never had a home or a family. So to him, this is a new and exciting bonding experience, walking around with you, being your buddy.
He’s also terrific with other dogs. (Naturally, since he learned to count on them out in the desert!) And he gets attached to certain ones and wants to be best friends with them all the time.
Papago is eight years old and very healthy. Could you be the one to bring him out of his shell?
A big, smart galump of a dog!
This beautiful Hurricane Katrina survivor is looking for love. And not just any love—the love of his life! Maverick is four years old, and he wants to find someone to help him do what he does best: Be a dog! He wants to play fetch, go for long walks and spend the rest of his life proving he’s the best companion dog anyone could want.
Maverick is really shy when he meets people at first. There are a lot of hurricane survivor dogs who are like that. But if you give him some time, he rewards you with his affection and trust. How will you know if “you’re in?” Maverick will come up to you and beg for back rubs.
Because of the storm memories, Maverick is frightened of loud noises. And he’ll be scared when he first meets you; he takes time. But if you’re patient, you’ll look in his eyes and see the words “thank you”. He is intelligent, sweet, and just needs an extra gentle chance.
While he’s waiting, Maverick would sure appreciate your support, and hopes you’ll sponsor him today!
This dog survived a broken back! Sandy Candy was hit by a car in Florida. A woman with sharp eyes drove by, noticed the “lifeless” body in a ditch by the highway, and pulled over. It was Sandy and she was still alive, but her back was broken. Sandy will always be incontinent because of the accident but, amazingly, with excellent medical care, she can walk again – and even play! It may be hard for an incontinent gal like her to find a home, but here at Best Friends, she has an excellent life with lots of friends and affection and regular medical care so she’ll always be loved and comfortable.
Cammi’s so, so pretty, and so, so shy. She reminds you of a woman who doesn’t realize how attractive she is, and bashfully ducks her head away. Cammi has good reason to be shy, though, but has come a long ways since she first arrived here.
Cammi was born in 2001, and came from a shelter in Idaho, where she’d been dumped with a sister. When she first arrived, Cammi was so shy, that volunteers had to leave the building before she could be leashed. With time and gentle handling, she can now be leashed by them. Wonderful! She even had her first bath recently, and did great. She really wants to be your friend, and if you sit quietly with a treat, she can be coaxed to visit. And who wouldn’t want to visit this lovely blonde beauty?
Such a happy girl!
Annie keeps forgetting to tuck her little tongue back in her mouth—she’s just so delighted all the time, it’s hard to remember.
Annie is the friendliest dog you could ever want to meet. Once a stray dog, she’s so glad to have company, she’ll lean right into you, begging for more petting.
She’s a playful thing, too! Squeak-squeak-squeak, she loves her squeaky toys. Give her games to play and people to rub her tummy, and she’s in heaven.
She’s only four years old and in perfect health, and does seem to prefer people to other dogs.
The funniest thing about Annie is that even when you leave her in a room all by herself, she seems to find games to play. She’ll play with her doggie cot, redecorate her room. She’s a bundle of creativity and fun! And very kind-hearted and snuggly.
Beckett is nearly blind, and he knows that he won’t be around forever. In his youth, he got in trouble for nipping mailmen, and you could say he’s spent the rest of his life in exile! But he’s sweet old fellow these days, who just wants to toddle around on walks with you. And he promises he’s sorry about those mailmen … it was so long ago, and he’s so much mellower now. And, well – they had freaky uniforms on! Now that his days are slowly winding down, he’s wishing there was someplace he could belong.
Beckett gets along just great with other dogs. He absolutely loves “meatball” treats. He’s cautious at first, but then gets very attached to people who are nice to him.
I’m gonna start checking out the animals and pick a new one. So fun. These guys pics and stories are so sweet and heartbreaking.
for September to arrive so I can sponsor another animal! Its so exciting!
