I think I’ve watched other movies since I last wrote anything here, but…
I saw ‘Dan in Real Life’ (starring Steve Carrell and Juliette Binoche) earlier this week, and I really enjoyed it. The whole family dynamic seems COMPLETELY improbable to me, but besides that, I thought that they did a great job. The characters seem real (even if they act, as a family, in unreal ways), and the point of the story touches my heart. Its a feel good movie, which I always enjoy, and I laughed and cried during it. Also the mark of a good movie, to me. (That being said, I think that I could cry at any time, in any situation this week.)

wow. Powerful. Tragic. Tore me – you can’t really root against the “bad” guy in this one. Highly recommend it, though! Its tough, but worth it in a big way!

I admit it, I am entranced with nearly everything Jane Austen. So… I felt compelled to go see this movie. I think I approached it with a good attitude – its a movie, not meant to be ever so insightful or accurate. And, truth be told, I really don’t know the true story, and I’m not sure how much I care. So. That being the case, I enjoyed this movie. It may be a little slow in parts for some, but I thought it was nice. A lot of Pride and Prejudice, a dash of Sense and Sensibility, and a touch of Mansfield Park, all wrapped up in 2 hours. :) (as a disclaimer, I dragged a poor boy to it, who told me repeatedly before and after the movie about how much he had enjoyed the preview of 3:10 to Yuma; I think he was trying to tell me that despite going to see “Becoming Jane,” he wanted to be sure that I knew that he preferred guy movies with shooting and imminent risk to personal safety.)

A friend invited me to the sneak preview for Stardust last night. I had few expectations – I really didn’t care whether I saw it in the theater or not. But… this was the perfect movie. It was fun, entertaining, magical, romantic (very romantic, actually), and often quite beautiful. It was very well cast – Michelle Pfeiffer was more perfect as a witch than I could have imagined. Movies with people named Tristan always seem to have an element of corn, but this was well-executed corniness. The idea of a star as the romantic heroine is perfect – capturing the glow that people in love feel. I thoroughly enjoyed that.
Several times I laughed out loud – maybe even many times. It was a fun movie – no real moral to the story, you aren’t supposed to grow from having watched this, but you can expect to enjoy it. I’ve heard it referenced as a Shrek for grown-ups. Maybe… but I enjoyed Shrek, and I am a grown up! So… I can see a bit of a comparison, except that our romantic hero here in Stardust is very nice to look at and doesn’t have snot or mud anywhere. And he’s not a hermit – he’s a little awkward, but socially engaging.

I was among the masses who herded to the theater to watch this during its opening weekend. I still get a little bit of a thrill for watching a movie during its opening. Apparently, a lot of people sought that thrill on this one! We purchased our tickets early, got to the theater early, and I was glad! v. v. crowded. And worth sitting in a crowded theater for!
These movies – the Bourne trilogy – are not my “type” of movie. I don’t generally like violence, I’m not keen on government conspiracies, etc. etc. But I love these movies. They integrate the personal psychology and emotion of the characters with the Incredibly fast-paced action and thrill of it all very well. The twists, turns, and spins leave me a little breathless, but what a thrilling ride to be on. Matt Damon excels in the role of the stoic, putting on the brave face, and its just fun to watch. My movie companion also particularly enjoyed the crash scene in this one. Go see it – its a fun one! I’d see it again…

I watched “If Only” and “Stick It” last night. Clearly, neither are ever going to make it onto a best of list. If Only was depressing, sad, and didn’t end right. When you are watching a Jennifer Love Hewitt movie – a made for tv movie, at that – it should end right! This was clearly designed to make people cry. It did. Even though it was cheesy.
Speaking of cheesy… Stick It totally rules. With writing like “Call me.” “Stalk you.” Cheese is totally the theme of the movie, and it was thankfully just the right length (about 1.5 hours)...

a documentary about the effects of meth on the gay community. i don’t use meth and i’m not gay, but i am moved, challenged, enraged, sad, and motivated. a very powerful film. don’t know about how widely released it is (i don’t think it is incredibly available, actually, but you could find more information at www.rockbottomfilm.net), but it is a problem that is increasingly affecting even my little rose colored, rounded-edged world. and it isn’t just a gay problem, so you know… in fact, people just like me represent the fastest growing demographic of meth users and addicts. who are people like me?
- women
- have a lot of different things going on
- worry what people think about me
- people with body image concerns
- people who aren’t teenagers anymore. or even close to it. or people who are teenagers.
good movie. hard to watch. harder still to know that i live in the same world with the people in the movie and i haven’t done anything.

so i totally didn’t expect to like this movie, but it wasn’t my turn to pick. slept through the 1st 1, and sort of expected the same from this 1. while i did not love it, it did entertain me, and i stayed awake! i was pleasantly surprised.
