My mom grew up with horses and riding horses. She always wanted us to love them too, but growing up in an urban environment wasn’t the best place to foster that love. She would send us to horseback riding summer camp, take us on weekend riding in the city or out of town and hand me all these silly horsie books like Black Beauty and My Friend Flicka to read. We also had a bouncy horse and hobby horses and toy horses. My mom also painted horses in paintings and on things, like my rocking chair. She championed a campaign on behalf of the carriage horses of Central Park to get them more rest and better working conditions. She really was horse-crazy. I could care less about horses.

My mom is not the greatest cook but there are a few dishes that she does that I just adore. One is her scrambled eggs with grape jelly and toast or an english muffin on the side. Usually my dad cooked but on Fridays my mom would often make delicious fried flounder with lemon. She eventually got so that she could make a fairly decent roast chicken too. Mom… <3
She had a closet full of really crazy high heeled shoes. It was the 70’s so it was the style, but some were really over the top. Some were not intended for normal wear.
When we were quite little my mom would get this big roll of butcher paper, tape it up to both sides of the hallway leading from the living room to the kitchen and invite all the kids from the neighborhood to come over and draw on it with us. We had all sorts of crayons and markers and we drew all sorts of places on it. I think she told us to draw a place. We drew fantasy forests, our neighborhood, a strange city – all sorts of things. This was a wonderful, fun thing my Mom did for us when we were kids.
