Yesterday I walked in the graduation ceremony. It brought tears of joy to my eyes, first when we were walking in the processional as the band played Pomp & Circumstance, and again when people threw their caps into the air. This is the first major ritual I’ve ever participated in that felt meaningful. It felt incredible when we switched the tassel from the right side of the cap to the left. One of my professors gave me an enormous hug when I walked by after receiving my “degree” (not really a degree, that comes later). It meant a lot to me.
It was a stunningly beautiful day, too—sunny, a few clouds, pleasant breezes. I loved seeing everyone in their medieval academic garb, especially the Ph.D.s with their huge colorful robes. Two friends took pictures. One friend came 600 miles to see me. Another friend gave me a beautiful rose. The best wishes and congratulations from friends, classmates, and professors made me feel wonderful.
I can’t believe it’s finally happened. Two years ago I set the goal of doing this in two years, and I’ve done it. I will carry the warmth of this day with me for a long time.
