build a HERF gun

This book seemed like it would help, but when you read the chapter which claims to be plans for the HERF gun, he refers you to his website There you can buy plans. Great. The book is reasonably interesting as far as what is possible, but really, I’m not amused by the author’s style. I felt there was a bait and switch. As far as they theory goes, I’ll just dig out my textbooks, thanks.

In some ways, a HERF gun is the antithesis of the Theremin. Where as the Theremin is fidgity and a little outside my realm of electronic understanding, it is easy to build. (Following a schematic is different than designing a cicuit. The latter still troubles me. I wish I had taken a few EE classes…) A HERF gun, on the other had, has a simple schematic. I was tested over all its principles as a sophomore. Building it requires heavy-duty material and a fair amount of power. Nonetheless, I have chanced upon a guide who knows a thing or two about this. I may build this in short order after my Theremin.

I must renew my plans for a HERF gun. I do not like having my picture taken. I have reasons for this. Chances are, you would not respect these reasons, but that is inconsequential. I do not respect many of your thoughts and opinions, but I do respect your humanity. Hence, I respect your right as a human to differ from me.
When cameras had film and took some effort to develop, I rarely had to confront this issue. Now, every poseur artist who never learned to draw or paint lugs around a digcam. It’s the buckshot approach to art—through selective editing they can create the impression that they have a subtle eye.
You can’t reason with these people; you can’t explain your preferences and expect that they will treat you with respect. I have been at a loss how I should deal with these people. Today, the answer dawned on me. I will burn out their cameras with EMP.

If you are a Romero fan, you understand the need for being useful. I don’t suppose that we can all live our lives preparing for a zombie attack, but it useful to try to imagine how you could be useful rather than be just another liability. This desire guides many of my goals. My desire to build a HERF gun is similar at first glance, but a HERF gun is only really good for stopping other people from using electronic technology. And stopping someone from doing something is a bit fascistic, unless you are stopping them from killing you. I guess I also find HERF guns interesting because I built one in college, but it is a technology, the existence of which people often deny.
