I just uploaded my first tapes and records.
Odd… All that early 80s punk sounds… immature and self-indulgent now. (Crucifucks, I’m looking at you.
Face it—that cop was NICE to you.) The old rap has
aged a bit better. There are a few gems that nearly
spawned a blog. I wish I could have gotten the word out
about Trollin Withdrawl. I think they really prefigured
Modest Mouse: “Attractive people never have to develop
traits like empathy or brightmindedness. We follow them
like worthless iron shavings.” Or Musical Suicide: “War
is bad. I know. I’ve seen pictures and read books.” Its
also sad to pick through stacks of albums. Video may
have killed the radio star, but CDs killed album art.

I’m starting to BitTorrent in all my tapes. I have to save the original cases to prove that I own the right to a copy.

All the CDs are in. Some are scratched and will have to be identified later. Now, on to the records. Then the tapes.

Added a 300 Gig external hard drive.
Uploading all my CDs and putting them off in long term storage.
The nicest part sofar is that it is bringing all the local bands into rotation.

I’ve put a bunch of CDs on the old computer.
I’ve been researching an external hard drive vs. an internal hard drive with a case. I want to look at the hardware, which will require that I actually go to the computer store.

I have one day of music organized. This, sadly, represents less than 5% of my collection. I am buying a new hard drive to handle this.

I updated my computer, got it running better and cleared off a lot of space. Now I am looking for a ginormous hard drive on which to put all the music.

Clean up the old Mac on Saturday.
Add one album a day.

I’ve realized that studios have little interest in signing artists or promoting new music. Thanks to copyright law, it is cost-efficient to promote old crap endlessly. (And don’t think for an instant that Live 8 wasn’t a desperate attempt by Geldof to move more copies of old Floyd.) Frankly, I don’t want to hand these bastards another dime. But there’s a problem: I enjoy some of the music. Hence, I need to convert all my old records, tapes and CDs to MP3. In the days of Napster, I would have just downloaded it all, because hey, I did pay for a license of the copyright. I’ll never buy the same Led Zeppelin album on a new format for the sixth time. My parents listened to it when they were young, and rightfully it should be public domain. Until the glorious day that file sharing is reinstated, I need to find a way to salvage all my old songs.
