"My father's suits" 2 years ago

Three people have been described as having inherited their father’s suits: Claibourne Pell, Lincoln Chaffee, and John Elkann. In fact, I think this may be a trope because a girl I went to school with informed me that she had inherited her father’s suits, proudly wearing a jacket of the Johnny Carson label.

This. This is what I am going for. I may have to rework this style if I end up producing the movie I have in the works, but we’ll see.

I haven’t bought new clothes because
a) I’m making less money than I thought I would.
b) I’m already as well dressed as the others.
c) No one comes into the office anyway…

Catalogue de la mode. 3 years ago

I’m working on moving today, which is a fine opportunity to get all my clothes out of boxes and see what I have. Too many of the same basic things, I’d say. (I blame gifts.)

However, I think part of the answer is to throw away anything that looks ratty, regardless of emotional attachment. Next, I need to establish a finite number of casual outfits. I am thinking four warm weather outfits and three cold weather outfits. (No matter what one says, I no longer live in the Cold.)

As for work, I intend to live in several suits, as noted earlier. I do not intend to wear these suits after work. (And life comes full circle, reverting to school uniforms and play clothes.)

I wonder if I will have any formal occasions. As for that, my solution must be somewhat ad hoc.

There are so many odds and ends with clothing and style. As noted elsewhere, I intend to get a motorcycle. I had always imagined myself as a sleek BMW cyclist, in black leather, perhaps with a bit of ricer flair in piping. I just rediscovered a old bomber jacket, befitting a vintage Indian.

Clairefontaine. Believe it, babies, I pay top dollar for this in America. In Paris, it will never be far behind. I should invest in a nice writing set, with pen, pencil and case.

Where does style end? I’m not happy with my home decor. This is not unrelated to my displeasure with my personal style. I move too frequently. If I buy a house or intend on living in an apartment for more than a year, I intend to decorate with Finnish design. (Most importantly, I need to hide all my books.) Of course, the bearing of all this on my personal style is not yet clear.

Last night, I was watching Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse. Most of the characters had a good style. Many Americans did well in the noir era, also.

I’m not sure if pressed grey flannel agrees with Finnish whimsy, though. Perhaps.

I have a job application open in Paris. 3 years ago

If I take this job, I am bringing few clothes with me.
I intend to buy four very nice suits and three pairs of nice shoes.

Job Search 3 years ago

My style seems to be job-search dependant.
I will relocate next year and that will probably determine the style I adopt.

You all keep cheering it, so... 4 years ago

I thought I’d give more info. I need to figure out what character I will be playing for the next five to ten years. Right now, it is “grad student.” The wardrobe for that is … ... bland.

I want to be able to present a consistent image: car, living space, clothing. I want you to look at me and think of an archetype: metal guy, businessman, doctor, rug merchant. I have not picked the image yet.

My living space is difficult because I live with someone else, so after I graduate, I will focus on clothing. I hope to shed myself of a lot of old clothes. In general, to reduce the number of my belongings.

Recently, I have found myself drawn to the sleek and powerful look associated with Helmut Lang, but dressing like that requires a fair amount of work. I wonder if I am up to it? Also, that would somewhat preclude surfing and skating. Suggestions?
