This was the first song of Coldplay’s that I LOVED. I really like a lot of Coldplay, but there is something about this song that consistently brings me elation. I know it will be a good day when I hear this song.

The morning my mom died, driving home from the hospital, I debated whether or not to turn on the radio. It felt sacrilegious to listen to the radio when I had just suffered a massive loss, but I couldn’t take the deafening silence any longer. The first station I turned to played this song.

Funny. That’s one of Mom’s favorite songs. Hi Mom. I miss you.

I listened to the song play in its entirety. Then I felt ok to turn it off for the rest of the ride home.

For the following week, I heard that same song play two additional times. You never hear that song. What are the odds?

I’ve taken it to mean that Mom is saying hello, reminding me of her presense, reminding me that she’s not too far away. I still hear it occassionally, and I stop whatever I’m doing to remember her, too.

I’ve always loved this song, and believed it would hold special meaning some day.

On the one-year anniversary of my dating J, Etta James had an outdoor concert at the botanical gardens here. I bought tix and brought a picnic for us, and it was really romantic. Of course, she sang this song, and the whole atmosphere was awesome. It is now “our song,” and will be the first song we dance to at our wedding.
