I live in an ordinary house which means I am going to live a big footprint behind – all the services I am linked into, even if I don’t use them, have already done lots of damage – power lines, water systems etc.
The ideal would be to build an eco-home like they have in Hockerton near Nottingham. http://www.hockertonhousingproject.org.uk/SEFS/ID.1351/SEFE/ViewItem.asp Well worth a visit for inspiration, as is Centre Alternative Technology at Machynlleth http://www.cat.org.uk/index.tmpl?refer=index&init=1
My starters for 10 – things I am already doing -
1 no more flights
2 recycle as much as poss
3 use energy saving light bulbs
4 turn lights off when not in use
5 turn heating down a degree and put more clothes on when cold
6 share bathwater or take a shower
7 put bricks in toilet cisterns
8 buy local food and grow your own
9 eat less meat – preferably organic if you must
10 insulate your home as much as possible
I would love to get rid of the car but the public transport is awful locally and not safe to ride a bike either and my partner has rheumatoid arthritis, so that’ not a compromise we can easily make yet…
