why?  — 2 years ago

I got this idea based on something I had read about Andy Warhol’s factory. Warhol seemed like quite a pack rat, or as wikipedia puts it:

“A meticulous collector, he organized almost every piece of paper, fan mail—after taking off the stamps—and magazine related to his fame along with personal notes, gay pornography and found artifacts into hundreds of numbered boxes and set them aside, never to open them again. Warhol referred to these boxes as his “time capsule”.”

In addition to this, he filmed hundreds of visitors in the Factory, many of whom he later used as a sort of cross-promotional street team known as the “Warhol Superstars.” I have seen several of these films, which essentially feature the visitor (anyone from a bum to Bob Dylan) sitting in one place without speaking in front of a film camera which runs on for a few minutes. Watching them in succession is hypnotizing and strangely powerful.

Well, I don’t think I can afford a 16mm movie camera, so taking a photo of every person who visits me seems like a similar way to capture souls in time. If for some reason I live to an old age, or have (curious) children, documenting the youthful wonder of my few friends in a systematic way seems worthwile, and it gives me an excuse to develop and exercise another skill (photography).
