Organize my home office

Well, I finished a lot of what I said I was going to do last year, re: getting rid of stuff. So now my office is emptier, but not much BETTER. I decided today that I had to do something to make the space more functional and inviting, and so I’m falling back on Feng Shui. Whether or not the voodoo magic increases my prosperity, it has at least given me some good decorating guidelines to work with. I started tidying up and moving some shelves around today, but, again, this could take awhile to fully implement.

I really feel like I’m on the verge of a breakthrough. I’ve managed to get rid of almost all of my old store inventory as well as piles of books and a big box of photos. I still have to sell off a few more items and sell off my wide-format printer. I’m getting more comfortable with the notion of just throwing things away. The idea that I have to sell everything or give it away to somene who wants it is really what’s been making this take forever. I think by the end of november, what hasn’t gotten a home is getting a new home in the garbage.

I came up with this idea that I want to have an entire wall of dry-erase surface and I’ve been looking into that, but that means I have to have at least one reasonable expanse of unobstructed wall.

I don’t have a pic this time, but I finally feel like I’m making REAL progress on this and the end is in sight. I replaced my old office chair with a new one that matches my desk and got rid of most of my extraneous equipment (still have to sell the wide-format printer). I’ve also managed to clear out most of my storage things and set up my closet much more efficiently to store supplies.

I still have a bunch of boxes and bags of stuff laying around, but the upside is that it’s all stuff I’ve gone through and I’m getting rid of, so I just have to give it all away.

I don’t know yet whether I’ll be able to get rid of my ikea shelves or if I’ll still need them, but I should be able to get rid of my extra table.

The other great thing about the big clean-out is that I’ve made almost 2 grand so far selling stuff off.

I can’t believe I thought I’d have this done by now. Who was I trying to kid? I still have tons of stuff to get rid of and I’ve at least been slowly ebaying a lot of it.

Since I shut down my web store, I have to get rid of all my excess inventory and then sell off all the storage things for them on craigslist. I also want to sell my wide format printer since it takes up tons of space and I really don’t use it much anymore.

Next I have to go through my supply closet and just pull out all the portfolios and miscellaneous office supplies I never use and give them to someone who can actually use them. Ditto with the dozen or so ethernet cables I have laying around.

At the very least, I’ve thrown out my broken furniture.

I’m hoping that if I get rid of enough stuff, I’ll have room to put in a little sofa and make the room more comfortable and versatile.

My office is piled with crap right now and I’m going to spend February thinning things out. I expect to have things under control by March.
