I hope you’re not in it for the money… I found that I enjoyed doing it, if only for myself. There are voluminous statistics available defining what to expect as income from this endeavor. I keep track of my progress, and write down the snippets I want to incorporate into the story arc. There are many places (such as lulu.com) where I could self publish the book, and that would be good enough for me.
But, having something to say that takes a few hundred pages to say means you’ve got a lot on your mind. And writing it all down is catharsis. For me.
