finished set 5 14 months ago

i let myself get a bit off-schedule – weekend fun, laziness – and monday was the first time i quit in the middle of my run! OY! ankle hurt, shins hurt, knee hurt, side cramp-i was over it. I think I only did a bit over 2 miles and then just ended at my boyfriend’s house-it’s closer than mine! But I have been stretching a bit more and today I am back on track and finished set 5. I felt MUCH better today than I did on monday.

thinking long-term 14 months ago

sooo… today i started thinking about how i am going to train for the 10k – seeing as my goal for running a 5k is just around the corner. then i thought, why stop at 10? what about a half marathon? a full marathon?! I started reading about training programs and i know it will be quite an undertaking—but I am finding that i appreciate the slow’n’steady aspect of getting better and better at this.
i’ve also pinpointed my first real race! november 22—5k! yeehaw
this morning: 34 min:3 miles (walk 4, run 3, w 1.5, r 5, w 2.5, r 3, w 1.5, r 5, w 1.5, r 5, w 2) i know, crazy right? definitely carried a little post it w/ me to remember what the hell i was doing.

faster and faster 14 months ago

I performed better and better each run in set 4. I run 3 miles with a goal of 32 minutes. I didn’t make it in that time but am proud because each time i went faster.
1: 34 min [5 min walk + 3(1.5 run:1.5 walk + 3 run:3 walk)+ 1.5 run:30sec walk]
2: 33.5 min [5 min walk + 3(1.5 run:1.5 walk + 3 run:3 walk)+ 1.5 walk]
3: 33 min [5 min walk + 3(1.5 run:1.5 walk + 3 run:3 walk)+ 1 walk]

That’s right! My two faster runs didn’t have running tacked on to the end! My secret? Walk faster. Don’t use the walking periods to “rest” – use em to make distance and keep your heart rate up.
Now I start set 5 – it’s gettin’ harder!

beautiful sunrise 15 months ago

today was the first time i repeated a route i had already done. i really like running from my house to the end of the wharf and back (only have to cross one major street!) and it just so happens it’s exactly 3 miles – very close to a 5k!
SUPER excited – today I cut a minute off my time, i think because of the anatomy of set 4.
34 min:3 miles (5 min walk followed by 1.5 run:1.5 walk + 3 run:3 walk (x3) – i didn’t make it home so i tacked on a 1.5 run:30sec walk)
the thing i was most proud of was that i wasn’t jogging today. i knew that i had plenty of time to “rest” during the long walking sessions, so i really pushed myself to run-run, not jog-run.
tight!

nice to meet you shiv! 15 months ago

and great to have a running friend in Sydney! I had no idea what Boxing Day is, so thanks for directing me to learn something new. I live in Santa Cruz in California and have so far only run by myself. I can’t imagine the amount of energy that must be in the air during a big race! Awesome! Best of luck in beatin’ the heat!

After my shins were complaining I invested in my first ever pair of running shoes. I think they will be an improvement but I’m a bit worried because all of a sudden my legs are rubbing together! oiy! that sucks. plus my middle toes felt a bit tingly but hopefully that will stop as soon as the sneaks are broken in.

35 minutes, 3 miles (5 min walk followed by 2 run:1 walk x10)
and that finishes set 3. sweet. i had no idea our fisherman’s wharf is a half mile long! (funny: it’s not a true wharf and as of late no fishing is allowed along most of the length!)
edit: okay so maybe it is a true wharf…. idk – but i’m right about the “no fishing”! haha

yay good weather 15 months ago

i think today was the first time it wasnt foggy when i woke up for my run. that was awesome! nice brisk chilly but great colors in the sky as the sun rose!.........except today definitely didnt count as a run—i jogged. time for some real running shoes, my shins are finally starting to feel it. i also didnt push hard to make distance this morning. so, 35 mins – 2.7 miles. i NEED to get better shoes if i am going to make progress without hurting myself.
5 min walk followed by 2 run:1 walk x 10
:D

back on track 15 months ago

I’m really glad I am sticking with this! It is normally pretty hard for me to stay with a commitment – but I have been pretty damn good about it – and this coming from a person who would have said she hated running just a month ago.
This morning: 35 min, 3 mi! yay! (5 min walk followed by 2 run:1 walk x10) I was really pushing myself to make distance. I can run just about 2 minutes without looking at my watch—so I like this set. However, this made me worry about how am I going to be able to run 30 minutes without looking at my watch?! Now that I put it in writing though, that looks silly, of course I’ll be able to do that by 11/1.

a day late and .2 mi short :) 15 months ago

28 min, 2.1 miles (4 walk followed by 3 run:1 walk x6)
that finishes set 2 of 10!!!
tomorrow i get back on track and start set 3.

not bad... 15 months ago

i still have plenty of runs scheduled before my non-stop 5k on 11/01. but i think it’ll be easy by then!
this morning: 2.3 mi in 29 min. i’m okay with that—i can only get better!
(5 min walk followed by 3 min run & 1 min walk x6)
