8. The End of the Affair by Graham Greene 18 months ago

The End of the Affair by Graham Greene – what a way we people have of botching up relationships!

7. Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood 18 months ago

Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood

Brilliant tale of childhood loyalty, betrayal, and faith that affects the characters throughout their lives.

6. Kim by Rudyard Kipling 18 months ago

Kim by Rudyard Kipling

Wow! This was so not what I expected! It was colorful, noisy, swirling, dusty, pungent, and left me wanting more!

5. Persuasion by Jane Austen 21 months ago

Persuasion by Jane Austen

A very persuasive treatise, but oh my! Could there be any more long convoluted sentences in one little book?

4. Saturday by Ian McEwan 21 months ago

Saturday by Ian McEwan—a brilliant story of one day in the life of neurosurgeon, Henry Perowne. From Henry’s awakening in the middle of the night through all the events of his day, I waited with bated breath to see it unfold and resolve.

3. Howards End by E. M. Forester 21 months ago

Howards End by E. M. Forester

For a work of 1910 it moves right along with the plot, while discussing the finer points of “there will always be rich and poor” with a few side trips to explore the differences in what is acceptable behavior for men vs. women.

2. Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck 22 months ago

Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck

one very short novel indelibly etched on my brain.

1. The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Writings by Charlotte Gilman 23 months ago

The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Writings by Charlotte Gilman

seven very delightful short stories petaining to the roles of women

My List 23 months ago

Last year I failed miserably, only reading six of them. I think my problem is that I picked books that I really didn’t have a lot of hopes of reading because I didn’t care about them one way or another. This year I’m picking 12 that I REALLY want to read. I have the added pressure (in a good way) that I have added or will add them to a virtual book box that I trade with friends who all want to read the books from Dr. Peter Boxall’s “1,001 Books You Must Read Before You Die” list.

1. The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Gilman
2. Persuasion by Jane Austen
3. Saturday by Ian McEwan
4. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
5. Kim by Rudyard Kipling
6. Howards End by E. M. Forester
7. Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
8. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte
9. Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood
10. Unless by Carol Shields
11. The End of the Affair by Graham Greene
