be a good aunt

talked to 2 of the nieces last night. That was good. I said something to one of them about how I hated it that I’ve never seen any of plays, or music recitals, or soccer games. They’re just so far away, you know? I don’t think she realized that I would have liked to have been there.

My oldest niece came to visit a few weeks ago & we had a nice visit. Unfortunately, I was starting to get sick, so I wasn’t quite all there, if you know what I mean. I hate when I’m not really “present” if that makes sense. We had a good time though, and it was the first time in like 10 years we actually got to spend time alone together. It was good.

It was easier when my nieces were younger. Mostly because they were only a 5 hour drive away, and I could do that easy. Now they’re more than 10 hours away. Not seeing them as much makes it harder to know who they are. The oldest is 13, so they are still pretty much changing all the time. The oldest is coming to visit next weekend (my birthday gift to her). I’m really hoping that not only do we have a great time together, but that she sees that I’m an adult she can come to & trust to be there for her – for whatever, whenever.
