The beefsteak tomatoes are the best tomatoes I have ever had in my life. The roma tomatoes are mealy and not yummy. I wonder if there is an heirloom roma tomato that would have more flavor. I still have tomatoes ripening on the vine (as the entire plant starts to fade away). Marking this as done…..time to concentrate on the beans, pumpkin & watermelons!

I just went out and picked the tops off of my basil. I came inside and made a salad with the basil and the tomatoes. I added a bit of mayo and some celtic sea salt. It was so delicious!! Yummy!
Someone from the neighborhood stopped to talk to me the other day as I was gardening. She tasted the basil and the tomatoes. She told me that what I had was a Victory Garden, like the ones that were grown during World War 2

Another man came by today and talked to me about my garden. He started off by saying “someone knows how to have fun!”. He said that seeing people growing their own food gave him hope for the future. He talked about how all of the others in the neighborhood were just wasting their water growing ornamentals. I agree with him. He is an officer at a church down the street and said that he talks to the members of the church about growing their own food as well.
My early girl has a few ripe tomatoes on it, just begging to be stolen by the neighbors.
The others have lots of flowers and some green tomatoes. Fun!
Well, I am doing pretty well. But I did mess up a bit. Four of my plants are doing great. One of them though is not. It was not growing very well and last night I got inspired to put it into the ground (it had been in a pot).
It turns out that the water was getting stuck in the bottom in the pan to catch the water. It was pretty much starting to rot the bottom of the plant. Poor poor plant. I feel bad. On a similar note, I tried to save a rootbound lavender plant last night. Poor thing was growing like crazy and ran out of room. I pulled it out, added more dirt and watered. I hope the tomato and lavender survive this upheaval.

I put them in full sun. I didn’t realize that it was tooooooo tooooo much sun, even for tomatoes. I forgot to water one day and at the same time used seaweed fertilizer on them w/ out proper dilution. Darn. I killed them. This is the first time I have done that in years! I have 3 newbies. They will go in the ground soon. I will get something to shade these tomatoes…even just a little. It just gets too hot and there.
The guy at the farmers market had a variety of tomato seedlings. I bought two Beefsteak and one Roma. I planted the cutest marigolds in between the tomatoes because they are companion plants. Each tomato has it’s own dark green cage, it looks much better than the steel looking ones I usually use.
