but her family still managed to help her, and she’s now living here in Auckland with them, along with her two little boys, Yay! Thank God she is safe now.

Rasha is a sister of the little girl I teach. Her family came to New Zealand as refugees in September 2005. Rasha stayed behind with her husband and little boy. Now her husband has divorced her and she is alone in Iraq with no family. She has her little boy who is four and a little eight month old baby. In Iraq it is bad if you’re divorced and it is bad if you’re Palestinian too. People there have heard her family is in New Zealand and they turn up at her house demanding money because they think that because her family are living in New Zealand they must be rich now and sending money to her. She is afraid to leave her own house for fear she will be killed. One time when she did leave the house with a male friend, the man she was with was shot because he was seen with her. She is afraid that someone will kidnap her older son for ransom money and she has no way of making money to support herself and her two children. Her family desperately want her to come to New Zealand too but they have to have lived here for three years before they can apply to bring more family over.
