Ben has written 3 entries about this goal

Madam Butterfly was not for me

Maybe this isn’t the right place to write this, I really tried, I entered into this with an open mind, but sorry, I couldn’t suspend my disbelief long enough to enjoy it.

I thought the story was shallow, sensational and ridiculous. Miss Butterfly is a kid, her husband is a stupid pervert paedophile with no likeable features, how could she fall for him? The family that disowned her, surely someone could have seen it all coming, why didn’t they stop her from going through it in the first place? Secondly, this all seamed like some ignorant interpretation of Japanese life by someone that’s never gone there, if I was Asian, I’d find it offensive.

Daytime soap operas are better scripted than this racist drivel.

Lastly, ENO sang in English, but clearly didn’t have confidence in their ability to communicate, so to improve the situation they had an odd distracting subtitling system above the stage.

Hopefully, not all Operas are like this one.

I'm ticking this off tomorrow...

7:30pm, ENO’s Madam Butterfly at the London Coliseum.

This place has inspired me

I’ve got not much to say, other than in two weeks time I’m off to see my first Opera. I bought the tickets today, I’ll soon be seeing Madam Butterfly.
