Yesterday I promised myself some things, publicly, here at 43Things. Goals, we call them. The first is coming back to morning pages—my own, not Julia Cameron’s. Though her book The Artist’s Way is what inspired me originally, and what names the process.
I began:
Over coffee I will write for the benefit of having put pen to paper. As the days dawn, I shall write…
I wrote three pages about my stated goals, how I might pursue them, their importance to me. I can see possibilities for blog posts on those pages already. Not developed, but the seeds are there.
I ended:
I have plenty to do today… no time for boredom.
Of course, I’m never bored…

First I make the coffee, snuggle into my reading chair that faces the outside through a large window wall, and write. As the sun comes up. The quiet morning sounds are the best music for me.
My favorite tools are a journal, one with spiral binding so it lies flat or folds back easily, and a roller ball pen. I buy the pens at Staples by the dozen and the journals wherever I find them.
It intriques me that the sound and feel of the pen on good paper makes a difference as I write. Just as important as the roast of the coffee bean, and the need for my coffee to be piping hot, with a bit of cream.
I wonder how and when the rest of you journal—those who have journaling as a stated goal? And what your favorite tools are?
