My bittercotton i.d. is associated with all kinds of porn and drugs and things you don’t tell your mother about. I posted pictures of my mushrooms in web forums (I was so proud when they grew!) I submitted a story to an X-files slash site. I say all sorts of corny things on my blog that make me want to barf when I re-read them. Having a fake online identity allows me to be really “real” about my personality.
Sometimes it seems incredibly tedious to have a seperate e-mail address for family members, coworkers, online retailers, etc. It’s sort of dishonest and trying to keep track of all the passwords and the overlap is frustrating (i.e. Since gamelink.com has my real name and billing address what’s the point of giving them my fake e-mail address? Turn’s out it’s spam, but still.) If you google bittercotton the first thing that comes up is this list of goals. How many of the people I’ve given that e-mail address to are smart enough to make the connection?
My goal is to stop being so sloppy about who gets what information. It’s worth it just to make sure I don’t get dooced.
