The best place to see the Northern lights in the US is in Alaska in either March or September. There is an aural oval where the lights occur and it usually passes over Alaska. You can find different sites like this that help you find out when you can see the lights.
Outside of Alaska the best places in the US seem to be the northern most states along the Canadian border. For me the closest would be Maine. I should look into that.

I really have no plan for this goal right now, but it is definitely something I want to do. I should probably start by making a list of places where I can go to see the lights. I think at this point the closest place is Canada. I’m just not sure how far North one would have to go into Canada to see them.
