Last juror by John Grisham 2 months ago

Whenever I read John’s writing work my desire of writing something dies instantly..Amazing..no? Generally people get inspired after reading something good. But in case of John’s fiction, people tend to think howcome a single man is so competent for having such a vast knowledge in every field. John is a bundle of knowledge. Now in this novel he gives details of print media. Yes! When you try to dig minute details of printing press and how a newspaper based on obituary becomes a success story of the town, amazes you and suddenly you feel elevated. This book is not a thriller like Jonn’s other work nor it is a case based on law. It does not scream all about corruption in law field. It is a simple story of a friendship between Willie Traynor, newspaper editor, and Callie Ruffin, a black woman and mother of eight children, all professors except one Sam. Willie finds opportunity to upgrade his newspaper when Danny Padgitt commits a murder after brutal rape. Willie gives gory deatails of this murder. People of Ford country accepts him and believes in his detail and a result is he an instant celebrity and also a marked man. Padgitt finally gets his, but not full-out. His life sentence is evidently not quite as “lifelong” as everyone thought, and as soon as he’s released, the killing starts. This, all because of his statement to the jury on his way out that he will have his revenge on the jurors. When the case is solved after various ins and outs of intriguing details, Willie loses his interest in running newspaper.
I found this novel totally different from other John’s work. Story has its unexpected turns but story moves in its pace automatically. You don’t have to worry about the next turn of its events. It does not arouse anxiety as you never get involved in its characters. you know it s a story and your author knows how to give justice to its characters. So I cannot compare this book with a classic work but overall it is a good read.

Vector by Robin Cook 3 months ago

This time when I visited market in search new books. I was tempted to buy again some other novels of John Grisham. Only then I saw this novel ‘Vector’ by Robin Cook. I remember, previously when I read ‘Coma’, I was awed by this author’s knowledge and remained in trance for many days. I used to have some scary feelings for room no. 13 for sometimes. Now again when I have gon through ‘Vector’, I was truly impressed with the author.
Yuri Davydov, a Russian émigré, cab driver in Newyork city, after havingfelt badly about his broken dreams in the United States, which denied him the opportunity for contentment and job opportunities is ready to lash Newyork with bio-weapen , before he returns to Russia. As a former technician for the vast Soviet biological weapons industry Biopreparat, he knows just how to use his knowledge of bio-weapons to conduct an act of bio-terrorism. He met with two firemen who are in a militia, they also join hands.
Jack Stapleton, a medical examiner and Dr. Laurie Montgomery begin to witness some unusual cases in their capacity as forensic pathologists in the city’s medical examiner’s office: a young, healthy black woman dies of respiratory failure, a Greek immigrant succumbs to a sudden, overwhelming pneumonia.. When an unexpected breakthrough persuades Jack that these seemingly unrelated deaths are really connected murders, his colleagues and superiors are skeptical. But the question soon becomes whether the pair will solve the puzzle before Yuri unleashes into the streets of New York the ultimate terror: a modern bioweapon. Suspence reaches at high point when callous team of trio are in their high spirit to destroy major part of Newyork and Jack and Laurie are traped in a basement cell.
I had heard too many things about bio-weapen and bio war. It was like star war in movies. But Robin has sketched out the vivid description of bio war so beautifully that heart starts pounding assuming fear of your kitchen’s tap water being contaminated. You start thinking that can destuction be so easy? Is life so vulnarable? Yes Robin is successful in making wonders again in story telling. If medical field is not loathsome for you and if you want to enhance your medical termonology and of course for a intriguing thriller you may go for this book. An interesting book.

Playing for Piza by John Grisham 4 months ago

As usual.. like an ardent fan of Mr. John Grisham I picked this book enthusiastically and amazed to find out that this book is not a legal thriller. I lost my interest immediately and when I start turning its pages I thought what rubbish! what on earth John had to write a book on football. But it kept me engaged and slowly I got envolved in story
Rick Dockery is a third string NFL quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, resulting in the Browns missing their chance at their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. He is cut from the team. victim of media, facing severe body damge during games also facing legal troubles , his agent Arnie tries to find him work in the NFL, but no team will take him. Arnie manages to find him a starting position for the Parma Panthers of the Italian Football league for meager compensation. Rick accepts the job, glad to get away from the negative press and his legal troubles in the United States,In Italy, where he doesn’t know the language and where American football draws little attention or respect. The Parma Panthers have only two other Americans on the team—halfback Slidell “Sly” Turner and Safety Trey Colby.

The Panthers team now are depending on Rick, But Arnie, his agent meanwhile has found him a more lucrative job offer with a more respected CFL team. But Rick ,who has now a feeling of loyalty, decides to honor his contract with the Parma Panthers. With renewed resolve, a talented Italian wide receiver and a new strategy, the Panthers win each of their remaining regular-season games, then advance to the playoffs and the Italian Super Bowl, a very close and hard-fought game against their rivals, the Bergamo Lions creat a new history. This story has charm of romance of Rick’s girlfriend, Livvy also. With whome he decides a future in Italy and ressolves to give his life to his favorite game Football.
After finishing this novel I was surprised to know that this story is not fictional but it is based on a real instance. I felt great. Though it is not that enthralling kind of story, where you are dying with curiosity. Instead it is plane and simple story of willingness,determination..where one can have win win position alsways. For light reading you may go for it.

White Tiger by Arvind Adiga 5 months ago

I read this novel only after hearing that this book has grabbed Man Booker Prize…’The White Tiger’ is the story of Balram Halwai, a simple son of a villager, who comes to Delhi after accepting offer of a job as chauffer . In fact the story is an suggestive letter to Chinese Prime minister Wen Jiabo ,giving him a detail of a life style of entrepreneur. Because Mr. Wen Jiabo is due to visit Bangalore, where Balram lives and has proved himself a successful entrepreneur. Its a sort of confession, Balram was called sometimes back in his childhood ‘White Tiger ‘ a rarest animal by an impressed Inspecter of schools, who promised to give an opportunity to take more education but his family insists him to take driving lisence instead and than Balram finds an opprtunity to go to Delhi and live a life with Ashok and his wife Pinky Madam. Now he is away from his greedy family. Ashok a polite master has his hands set on Balram. Who possesses all quality of feudal lord . Balram halwai is a pack of unleashed desires which takes him to commit a brutal crime. He leaves city to Bangalore with sufficient amount to start a small business. Where he observes city life and finds out the need of the city. He is now a clever businessman. But his desires never permit him to sit and enjoy a settled life. He has all plans to start a new business like a White Tiger , who rarely enjoys his cage .
Arvind Adiga has set new vocabulary like A ‘half baked Indian’ (An illiterate citizen) and he describes life of a common man is as “Rooster’s Life’. Well no doubt Arvind’s virgin writing is capable of telling an adventures story. But what’s the role of Mr. Wen GIabo in the story, difficult to understand. May be author wants to compare our democratic view with communism. But who goes for these minute details..? If you want to go for a light reading , may go for it.

Partner by John Grisham 9 months ago

Being an ardent fan of John Grisham I leap hungrily on his every book and every time it feel satisfies my appetite . I wonder how I could miss this book. John is a great story teller..Best thing in his part..: one can never guess the next turn of story.

Patrick Lanigan is a partner in a law firm in Biloxi Mississippi, where he is killed and burned beyond recognition, cremated and then buried. After his death large sum of money say, 90 million dollars goes missing from his law firm, Patrick becomes prime suspect..Patrick goes underground and after four and a half years found in Brazil, where he is tortured by some hooligans hired by his law firm and two insurance companies to know the location of money . Patrick has kept this money with his lawyer friend Eva..Who has manipulated things and kept money in several locations. Here starts the mind boggling game. Patrick has wise plans and a secret to bargain his proposed punishment with the FBI, the Justice Department and Harrison County Law Enforcement., alongwith several audio tapes, where a senator is also involved.
Though this is unbelievable that how can a single man plot so perfect flawless plan without any fail in any front? But presentation of story is so intriguing that reader does not mind and ignores to go into any details. But end of the story is superb..an unexpected rather shocking turn takes you to new world. That gives you to ponder again on the story line and more so about it’s well framed characters. I will suggest this book to read for suspence and entertainment.

Anne Frank: A diary of young girl 9 months ago

In the previous part of history Jews chapter is the blackest chapter on the name of humanity. I have read plenty of literature available on Jews. But I was moved when I had gone through its pages.
Diary as it seems; a writing on your personal affair, where you are at your own with no exaggerated drama, you are truly yourself to your innermost feelings. At the age of 13 years, Anne had to face changing colors of nation. As Jews in Amsterdrum are already facing threat to their lives; She is to live in hideout that is practically not worth living; In a small floor hidden above Otto Frank’s old workplace.. More families are also to be adjusted including Mrs. And Mr. Van Daans and his son Peter .. They have to share their little food supplied by some helpers and place where they are not having even walking space, they are being derived to sun shine or fresh air because there is constant fear for being trapped by Gestapo. The girl Anne Frank is ambitious, who develops a habit to write everything on pages. She has courage to face all adversities without cribbing, She wants nothing but fresh air and a small piece of sky on her window. I was shocked to know when I read about her last days, passed in concentration camp, where Anne was forced to strip naked to be disinfected, had her head shaved and was tattooed with an identifying number on her arm and where she died of typhus. Her mother and sister died in front of her, whom she never could meet in her life. It’s a pity do die this death. Though death was sort of relief to her. A true story to rely upon. A biography to get a real gruesome picture with no artificial emotions. A must read book.

Thank you Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse 12 months ago

Since my childhood I have incessantly been hearing the name of P.G. Wodehouse.I have seen this name mentioned in so many novels and most of the celebrities, in their interviews, have taken this name in most nostalgic way, having fond memories of its reading. So I decided to read it. I bought it from a book house and started its reading rather hungrily. I had heard that this is the first Jeeves novel published in 1934.
What to say.. my over swelled enthusiasm was flat instantly when I finished its third or fourth chapter.. Its story is based on a story of English Lord Bertie Wooster and his intelligent adviser valet Jeeves, who hates his lord’s newly developed banjolele playing and leaves his employment, Joins Bertie’s old friend, Lord “Chuffy” Chuffnell. Lord Bertie after receiving many complaints from his neighborhood decides to leave his present residence and shifts to the remote location. Jeeves is replaced by crooked Brinkley. Chuffy wants to sell his ancestral house to meet his financial problems.. He invites J. Washburn Stoker with his beautiful daughter Pauline, who happens to be Berties ex fiancée but now she wants to get married to stoker. Here begins the show ..‘The comedy of error.’
Author has used many punches to tickle your nerves, many gimmicks to make you roll in laughter. Especially; in the story part. Dialogues have its correct timings, completely describe the characters. But I found this book little bland. Fan of P.G Wodehouse may not like my criticism of a well established writer, who also has set a trend, including setting the style of the British settle joke and following his way of writing, many writer have successfully written other comedy stories,. But in my view story lacks suspense. You may be wondering what the roll of suspense in the comedy is? But in my view.. suspense is always an essential element in any kind of story. Whenever I found an unexpected turn in the story and I got intrigued, suddenly story drifts back to its usual monotonous pace( though tickling). This book may be recommended for light reading, especially if you are traveling.

Making the minister smile by Anurag Mathur 13 months ago

I picked up this book alongwith Book Thief just to make my mind lighter. I find this book quite unlike “Inscrutable Americans”,at least you could find some humor there..this book starts with comical note but all of sudden it takes swift drift to a srious problom like labor strike in an industry..
This is a story of a industrialist Ram Avtar Kapoor, who runs a utensil factory,Chris is his American collaborator..everything is running smoothly then a labor union leader Prabal Kumar with nasty intentions comes forward and announces a strike . His demands are so loathsome that there is a threat to the owners of industry for their total collapse. They meet minister, who gives a deaf ear to their problems. Chris is made offer to become a mediator for forcing Kapoors to change their business line. Here he starts looking unusual things like repeat name of Mian Shankar Aiyer in several places. He is in grip of psychosis fear. Chris and his friend Ajayvir finds simple solution to eliminate their rival Prabal Kumar, they try to contact a contract killer. But their scheme fails. They are at the verge of lock out their industry then a miracle happens and minister actually smiled.Every problem comes to an end. In this story line I don’t think Anurag had better to write. But several time he goes off the track, he has become over dramatic by painting Kaplana’s character, who is unusually freaky bindass female with no morals.Basically in India girls have still some inhibition to go for free sex..if a girl goes for sex, there must be an emotional attachment(exceptions are every where..) A simple story line but events are described in over dramatic manner. Unusual suspence fails to catch your attention. A time pass book.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak 13 months ago

I picked up this book on the recommendation of my friend and when I saw the cover page..I was awed by its picture
..a dancing skeleton is holding hands of little girl. Being slow reader I could finish it in 15 days..but I remained throughout with its protagonist ..a death..the narrator of The Book Thief.
This a story of second world war..where Jews are being thrown out from their own country..they are being sent to concentration camps.. and than death has an important roll to lift and carries the souls of dead persons, during this death meets a girl Liesel Meminger, who is 9 years girl with a passion towards book..although she is illiterate. Her brother dies..and in burial ground she steals her first book gravedigger’s instruction manual. Destiny takes her to her foster parents Hans Huberman and his wife Rosa Huberman..a poor couple..Rosa is sharp tongued but soft from heart but it is Hans, who gives affection to poor soul Liesel and helps her to read. She meets a lemon hair boy Rudy, who is next door neighbor and is Liesel’s best friend. Liesel find a place..a library in mayor’s house where she delivers laundered cloths and meets mayor’s wife Ilsa Hermann. She steals other books from there inspite of the knowledge of mayor’s wife..who ignores her stealing, sometimes helps het too. Hanhs has soft corner for Jews and there comes an old friend’s son of Hans..Max Vandenburg, who is afraid of being caught by Nazi. he is given shelter in Huberman’s basement and becomes friend of Liesel. In the constant falling of bomb and in fear of search from the nazis ..Max has to leave his shelter.Liesel learns so much from life that she starts writing her own book that finally saves her form death becuase She was busy writing in her basement when bomb takes life of every body including Rudy.
This story has some unusual angles. Markus Zusak has projected this image powerfully. A city which breaths through death, uncertainty of life and a passion to live in between..Writer has proved his version strongly that its all words, which dominate the world and words were the sole power of Hitler even..who would have not done though evil without using its word’s power.A complicated story but gripping.. You are sometimes lost in the vivid description of colors described by death itself.. Colors of death. I recommend this book for having a new experience.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel 15 months ago

My daughter strongly recommended this book and said with mischief in her eyes..”please go for this book..its amazingly good..when you reach at the end..read carefully and discuss with me..”So I started this book with great enthusiasm..and found hard to keep it aside even for a moment.Yann Martel..man booker award winner for this book has proved himself a great story teller.
The story is about Piscine Molitor Patel, self-christened as Pi.Pi Patel is an earnest young man in Pondicherry, a tiny area in southern India, whose father owns a zoo in Podicherry. Growing up in the zoo, Pi learns a lot about animals.Pi is ardent follower of God and goes for the worship of ‘Allah’(Islam), ‘Jesus’ and ‘Bhagwan’(Hindu God),He believes in one God.
In unusual circumstances Pi and his family has to leave India for Canada. The zoo is closing and the animals are being sent to zoos all around the world. The family and many of the animals board a Japanese cargo ship for their passage to Canada, which sank. The only surviver Pi is left in a lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan, and a 450 pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.Pi is alive to see the horrified battle of survival between the animals finally just the tiger and Pi are left in the boat. How does he survive his 227 days with a predator..i He manages to store rain water and inspite of being strictly vegetarian he is forced to live on raw meat of fishes turtles etc, that too is insufficient because he has to give tiger’s share before satisfying his own hunger needs ..more in fear of not becoming prey of tiger.Pi is incessantly living in despair. He is victim of boredom too..In his voyage he lands up in canivorus iseland..unbelievable situation..where tree can eat living being alive. The most interesting part of this book is its end..where he provides another story to make you dazzle. But He could prove that this is the matter of your belief in God.After finishing this novel you are forced to ponder..thats the soul pupose of this book. A must read book, I must say. .
