Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Diving back into Spanish!

So a while back I decided to dive into learning Spanish. I picked this particular language as the one to focus on currently because it was the easiest to practice here in my area and because I know a ton of people whom that is their native language and they could tell me if I was on the right page or not. I started with working with podcasts from and using and watching a lot of Spanish TV and movies which were great as beginning tools. The cool thing is that even though that was a few years ago, I still have many of the phrases memorized and they pop out randomly on their own. Though it was not at all working when it came to writing, it mostly in my case was helping me with simply understanding. My boyfriend at the time was Hispanic and his whole family spoke Spanish 90% of the time at home, so I was working on being able to understand conversation, but was always afraid to jump in and try out my own speaking skills for fear that they would find me hilarious.

At some point in 2011 I purchased: Instant Immersion Spanish Levels 1,2, and 3. And for some reason never opened it. Haha. I think because I moved shortly after and my life simply ended up in boxes. Well, last night I did find it in pristine condition and it resparked the craving to learn! I opened it up and popped in the first disk and was enjoying the learning style so far :D. Also I posted on Facebook, my joy of finding this little treasure and to my surprise my friends were all super supportive and one even posted a link to a site she is using to learn Italian: I have tried it out this morning and it was super fun too, it is free and appeals to the achievement hunting side of me with awards, and comparisons to your friends.

I am going to devote 30 minutes per day to working on my Spanish and making a point to practice the verbal part. Actually speaking to native speakers is a huge fear of mine that I need to get past and the only way to do it and to improve is to actually do it, even if I am making a fool of myself. Though with both of these new tools, I am stoked because they both use a microphone in the learning process so you must speak to it and you can compare what you said to how it is correctly said and see if you are on the right track. That will improve my self confidence in this matter by quite a bit since I know I wont be too far off since I can do this :D. I am still using my podcasts too.

Goal is to become fluent in multiple languages at some point in my life.

Paso uno: español!

It has always been really hard for me to learn languages and I have yet to figure out why. In the past I have tried learning Spanish, German, French, and Latin. Latin was actually the easiest for me, but it is not spoken and so is actually not super practical to learn. Haha :D. Anyway this year I have decided what language I am going to try to become adept at speaking, reading, and writing: Spanish. It was the first I tried to learn a million years ago and the one I thought I would never try to learn again… But my very good friend and his entire family speak mostly Spanish (and I would love ot be able to speak to them) and most of the places I tend to dance the main language is Spanish it will give me a really good way to practice what I am learning and have people correct me when I am way off. One of the main reasons I think may have been why I seem to have a problem absorbing languages is that I could speak with people in the class setting and so that was not very often. This is going to be my experiment in the real world instead :D. If I can get Spanish down maybe I will try for another too!

Right now I just subscribed to a membership to an online podcast type learning system and am going to give it a try for a month and see if that is a way for me to learn. So far it has been pretty good, though I am only three lessons into the very beginner level :D. Also I am going to watch the Spanish stations when I get a chance and pay close attention when I hear people around me speak Spanish to see if I can pick up what they are saying.

This may sound kinda silly, but I am honestly quite scared to ask my good friend for help in this area. He is a native Spanish speaker so I am sure would be a great help, but he has known me for years and I am afraid that I might sound really stupid all the time to him. Maybe that is just silly and I should talk to him about it… But if I could learn at least all of the very beginner level first (about 32 lessons) then I could shock and awe him ;).

Katrina has gotten 4 cheers on this goal.
